Chapter 5 by Nemo of Utopia Nemo of Utopia

What was my answer: fully convert to the light, or take a "grey" path?

Listen to my sister, mister, common and look for the Light!

"Yes, yes I would," I stated calmly.

"Very well, let me examine what you already... What?" Ariel's voice took on an incredulous expression. "Did you know that these lunatics have shoved two different kinds of genus core into you? You are simultaneously Therionic and Erosarkic, that shouldn't be possible." He said in dismay, while his actual mouth parts pulled back in a snarling growl.

"Let me guess, you have to fix that for light cores?" I asked.

"No, in fact I don't think that I could even if I tried. Your intrinsic field has been altered to REQUIRE the power of two genus cores, you couldn't survive without more than one now. Although, this does present a unique opportunity to see what will happen if we were to mix two of the light's core types... Might I suggest combining a Spirit core with one of the other three that I have available? It's long been theorized by our side that it should be possible to mix a spirit core and one of the others if we could just discover the method to merge two cores. We've never considered the possibility to make one type core form a brige between two genus cores before," Ariel explained sheepishly.

"Alright," I replied calmly; "what are my options for type and genus cores?"

"Well, type cores we only have three, Inspiring, Doom, and Beautiful. Inspiring is what it says on the tin: you inspire your allies and dismay your enemies. Doom cores are our 'combat monsters': for example your original world's Azrael, your archangel of ****, is a Doom/Angel core. Beautiful cores are mostly picked by people who are being swayed back to the light after having been monsterfied, or equally often, ones like you tricked into the process against thier own desires through powers of manipulation and suggestion. This is done not for its power, its relatively weak, actually, but the fact that it can slowly fill even the darkest of hearts with pure, genuine, and holy love for its bearer. It also makes thier physical form majestic and enrapturing, 'beautiful' in the same sense as a jungle, mountain, or fine art, not that of the more basely sexual manner of dark cores," Ariel explained at some length.

"Kay, that DOOM core sounds interesting, what's it do for me mechanically?" I asked.

"Ah, yes, the mechanical aspects..." He remarked dryly, his mouth-parts again not syching up at all well, though I was learning to ignore that aspect of the conversation. "Light-Siders are mostly about speed rather than raw power, so it allows you to inflict 5% of max damage with every single hit, ignoring any kind of defenses or immunities. It's basically a '**** of a thousand cuts' core. Coincidentally it allows you to bypass immunity to status effects and such as well, but at only 1/20th of normal potency, though with a strong enough effect for things with time or statistics variables that's not actually as important as it sounds like it is at first against opponents who are not far above your own capabilities: and 1/20th of 'lasts until countered' or 'permanently' makes no difference, a fraction of infinitity is still efectively infinite."

"Nice, that's the one I want then," I stated, impressed by its utility.

"Going for a martial build then? In that case, might I recommend mixing the Spirit Core with a Sin Eater? Normally we don't like to use that type anymore, it's a 'desperation move' kind of core in that it's purpose is utter annihilation of both body and soul, making resurrection of even Gods and Goddesses impossible. We only unleash these things as a last resort for planet's on the verge of being destroyed rather than let the Darksiders conquer them permanently, but, truth be told, Ruyanei has come close enough to that state often enough that I feel no compunction in dropping a Sin Eater into the mix down there," Ariel requested.

"Hum, mechanical benefits?" I queried

*Sigh* "Plus 100% boost to all EXP from killing, and thwarting any attempt to revive your victims," the lion of heaven responded, his mouth syncing up with the words for once.

"Yeah, sorry, I'm passing on that, I would prefer not to be stuck making completely irreversible mistakes if one of my ranged attacks takes out some random civilian as collateral damage," I decided.

"A laudable reason for not choosing such a core," the gigantic kitty admitted. "In that case, would you prefer to hear about Angel or Fairy cores next?", he asked.

"Fairies, I think, but before that, I want to know what this 'spirit' cores business is about," I requested, as flex my various limbs in preparation for having my cores replaced. My current body seems to be some type of monkey/cat thing.

"Alright," Ariel Growls though I don't detect any malice in it, it's just how he talks, "Spirit Cores are only nominally aligned with the light, almost a lesser 'Third' faction representing the ideal of 'balance' between light and dark. The dark tends to disrupt that balance more often than we do though, and some on our side tacitly agree with their ideals, so they are our allies, if not officially members of our side. And before you ask, their capabilities as a core type are: +500% resistance to both dark and light effects; +200% spell power, and +150% physical attack and defense," the lion began. "Fairies are ancient beings from strange paranormal worlds which intersect with our own in forests, jungles, and other areas of wooded wilderness. They are intimately connected to the cycles of life, ****, and rebirth, which grants them, +400% power to effects using the element of either Life or ****, and a general increase of +200% to both attack and defense regarding magical effects. Yes, that does work out to a +600% increase to the attack point of a **** effect, so don't piss-off fay creatures. I once made a height joke about a Pixy and now her entire extended family, including a queen of her race, have been trying to blind me off-&-on for 200 years and more. Another word of caution, Fae don't lie. They CAN but they DON'T, because any Fae who does the rest of them can tell that they have when they meet him/her, and all of them are **** to swear to help kill anyone who does among their own numbers at a fairly young age."

"Mmmm, tempting, but that 'kill anyone who has ever lied' thing sounds risky, let's put a thumbtack in that option and review the bonus for 'Angel' type cores before making a decision," I suggested, and Ariel nodded.

"Angel Cores, like my own, grant bonus of +50% to physical attack and defense, +200% to magical defense, and +600% power to Light based powers, of which you are basically guaranteed to develop several since your entire being will be forged from pure light. Angels also don't lie, but it's more a cultural thing than anything else, we understand that there's sometimes situations that you can save lives by lying and such. Since you're going to have a mixed spirit/angel core if you take this option, you probably won't even look much like any type of angel people would recognize anyway, so don't worry too much about the cultural aspect either," Ariel said.

"Okay, so, if I'm doing my math right, that's a grand total of a +800% defense regarding 'Dark Type' attacks?" I asked.

"Close, +700%," he corrected.

"Okay, in that case, I want to be a...";

Which pair of cores do you choose?
