Chapter 9 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What will you tell Liens?

Let her know she doesn't need to have sex

You conceded that as much as you-- or any squire-- might prepare for this assignment, follow the rules, and try to enact the prophecy, the truth was, the word of Geod could never support impregnating an unwilling woman. That much was clear to anyone who had ever attended a day of church in Missionaire. There was simply no way that Geod's plan involved sex with an unwilling woman.

"So. Huh. Wait. What are you saying? You don't care about it then?"

You tried hard to answer the question without closing certain doors for yourself: it wasn't that you were dismissive of your duties as a squire. You didn't think that she should close her mind to the prophecy either. All you had to say was that whoever the mother was, and however the prophecy was fulfilled, it wouldn't be from her unwilling participation.

Liens lowered her head and bit her glove's thumb once again, deep in contemplation. "Huh? Really? Yes. Yeah, that makes sense. Or does it? Geod is a weird bastard. Fuck. But. Hm. Maybe. It sounds good." She nodded a few times, then turned tilted her chin up. Her frown was just a bit less bitter now. "Smart. Not bad. Pretty good squire. Good logic. For someone who's not me, anyway."

It sounded like she was finally warming up to you. Just as you thought this, she raised one finger.

"Plus. Backup plan. Artificial insemination."

You weren't sure what that meant.

"It means conception without sex. I'm working on it. Extract seed. Fertilize egg. Complicated. Can't do it yet. But you. You may be useful for samples. Good you came. Fulfill the prophecy with no sex. Good for me. Plus, then, we can give the squire seed to people in town too. Two birds, one stone. Get it?"

It was all a little hard to follow, but it sounded like she was coming up with some kind of invention that would allow the prophecy to be fulfilled with no need for sex. Whether that was a good or bad thing was up to you to decide. It sure put your past four years of study in the squireship program into question.

"Hey. You're not too dumb. Maybe smart, even. Maybe. You and I are on the same page. Rare. Good." The woman nodded her head with her hands on her broad hips. "I may need you. For ideas. Not sex. Don't want sex, do want ideas. Come by some times and I'll bounce ideas off of you. Good for us both." She reached out her gloved hand and you accepted it in an awkward handshake.

At least you knew what she wanted now... but it could be pretty opposite from what Geod wanted. Was getting her to open up to you one of Geod's trials? Or was Geod's trial asking you to see the boundaries she'd set and respect them?

It was only the first day. Perhaps, after time, the way you were meant to move forward with her would become clearer.

What's next?
