Chapter 13
by protoborg
What's next?
Let's see what else is happening in the area
As the two humans were being processed, DR-34D (Dread to its friends) had managed to use the distraction to get closer to the alien station. It looked menacing to any who might see it from Earth, but Dead simply saw it as another alien structure to be infiltrated. The humanoid drone moved closer to the hull and passed undisturbed through the shielding. Dread would have smiled at the Altheans' arrogance had it possessed a mouth. As it was, the drone's sense of satisfaction increased slightly. Carving into the hull slowly, the drone made and access path into the interior. It made sure to avoid tripping the internal sensors until it could better evaluate the level of danger it faced. The Protectorate had extensive plans of this particular space station as it was an older design. The drone thus had no need to explore too far in order to determine where the control center would be.
Dread did find it rather strange that the efficiency obsessed Altheans would utilize such an outdated space station. It made a sort of sense, Dread supposed as it would be less likely to be noticed being moved toward the Terran home-world. After all, why would anyone bother to track a 200 year old space station. Most would likely see it as a relic or simply as a huge piece of junk. Dread snickered in its metallic voice as it thought about how the Humans would have no clue it was even there despite it being so many centuries out of date. Dread heard a noise ahead and pulled itself into the shadows at the side of hallway. An Althean walked by just a few meters ahead. Once the alien was gone, Dread continued moving. It was recording the entire trip so that it could present any evidence to the Guardian Council. Scanning the internal map it had of the station, Dread made its way toward where the mining equipment was usually kept. So far, it had found nothing of value to report.
Dread stopped as it encountered several Altheans talking at an intersection of two hallways. It cloaked itself and began to record their conversation.
"Can you believe how different those two humans are? One resists the whole process and the other just goes along with it."
"I know. Pal may have found the perfect specimens."
"How so?"
"The first human shows how the process can work despite resistance and the second show how the process works when there is no resistance."
"I see what you mean. [a beeping is heard] Oh darn. My shift is starting."
"Where are you working this shift?"
"In Maintenance. I hate working down there."
"Oh come on. It can't be that bad."
"Derf is supervisor this cycle."
"Oooh. Yeah I've heard he can be a bit of a pain in the arms."
Dread shuddered internally at the misuse of the idiom. Humans might have some strange turns of phrase, but it was equally strange when they were used wrong. It noticed the two Altheans had concluded their conversation. The one working maintenance was walking one direction and the other was walking the other direction. As Dread had no clue where the second Althean was headed, it decided to follow the maintenance one. It thought perhaps it could find where the main engineering section was. This would give it a chance to set some things up for after it had sufficient evidence to convict the Altheans of crimes against the galaxy.
