LANDALE AND SUSPICIONS PART 1 - AKI POV

In the early morning, Aki settles into his daily morning meditation, gracefully crossing his legs on the ground. The unsheathed sword rests before him, an inseparable part of his existence as he delves deeper into the realm of magic. With meticulous care, he prepares his spells, allowing his expertise in swordsmanship and wizardry to merge harmoniously.

However, on this particular day, Aki finds it unusually challenging to find his focus. His left eye keeps drifting open, drawn to the sight of their camp where Landale diligently packs their camping equipment into their enchanted satchels. Beside him, Yumi paces and fidgets, wearing an inscrutable expression that adds to the distraction. Aki's concentration slips away repeatedly due to these disruptions.

After a minute of hearing Yumi's uneasy footsteps around him, Aki kindly asks, "Are you okay, Yumi?"

"Yes!" Yumi responds quickly, but her restless movements betray her true state.

"Are you certain?" Aki presses, sensing something amiss.

"Yes, yes," Yumi replies, still pacing.

Curiosity tugs at Aki, but he knows that Yumi can be quite stubborn. He realizes she wouldn't easily open up. "You said Landale volunteered to handle our belongings?" Frustrated by the distractions, he closes his eyes once more, yearning to reclaim his meditative state.

Yumi ponders his question while continuing her restless pacing. "I'm not entirely certain. Perhaps a night's rest helped him realize the extent of his mistakes during the battle with the Goblin Boss."

Aki grunts disapprovingly. He opens his eye again, keeping a watchful gaze. However, his patience wears thin. True meditation eludes him as long as Landale has their possessions and Yumi behaves strangely. Determining that he has to gain clarity on at least one of the distractions, he stands up and cautiously moves closer to observe his Landale.

I can sense any dangerous spells or symbols that might enter those satchels, but it is plausible that Landale's actions are not necessarily perilous. Nevertheless, I can't help but wonder why Landale would volunteer to do such a thing, Aki reasons within himself.

"Do you not trust him?" Yumi's voice breaks the silence.

Taking a deep breath, Aki maintains his unwavering focus on Landale, who now surveys the campsite to ensure nothing is overlooked. "I don't," Aki responds firmly, his voice filled with conviction.

Suddenly, Yumi's gentle hand caresses his face, guiding his gaze towards her. As their eyes lock, time seems to slow down, and Aki silently expresses his gratitude to the gods for leading him down this path. The sight of her beautiful face reaffirms his unwavering dedication to the choices he has made.

However, as he continues to gaze into her eyes, he catches a glimmer of moisture. Tears threaten to spill, tinged with a hint of guilt.

"Aki, I..." Yumi begins.

Interrupting her, Landale interjects, approaching them. "I believe it's time for us to depart. I have packed all of our things."

Yumi pauses, her eyes closing momentarily as she swallows. Eventually, she musters a sad smile and says, "Alright, Aki, let's go."

As Yumi begins to move away, Aki instinctively reaches out, his hand gently grasping hers and drawing her closer. In a tender embrace, their bodies intertwine, forging a bond that speaks volumes without uttering a single word. Time seems to fade away as they stand there, wrapped in the warmth of their trust and affection. Aki cherishes every moment, savoring the blissful sensation of holding the one person who truly understands him.

Eventually, Aki becomes aware of Landale's awkward attempts to avert his gaze from the intimate scene. Amused by Landale's discomfort, a chuckle escapes Aki's lips, and soon Yumi joins in, noticing the expression on their companion's face. The shared laughter brings a lightheartedness to the air, at the very least momentarily dissolving the tension that had surrounded them.

Their laughter continues until Yumi playfully retrieves her satchel from Landale, skipping towards the path and striking her signature pose - hand on her waist, another pointing onward.

"Are we heading back? That's east," Aki remarks, smiling.

"It doesn't matter!" Yumi grins. Aki smiles, relieved to see happiness gradually returning to her face. Her eyes now shimmer with the same vitality he has always adored, and he can't help but notice a faint blush gracing her cheeks.

Suddenly, Aki hears Landale's voice behind him. "Aki, your satchel."

Turning around, Aki is taken aback to find Landale half-bowing, presenting him with his satchel.

What on earth is happening? Aki thinks, utterly flabbergasted.

Throughout the day, Aki maintains a vigilant watch over Landale, but to his disappointment, he notices a striking change in Landale's demeanor. Gone is the arrogance, replaced by reservation and a newfound **** to engage in conversation. Landale inadvertently helps hide his true intentions, making it more challenging for Aki to discern his motives.

Like a dutiful servant, Landale obediently follows Aki's instructions, yet Aki occasionally catches him staring with a flicker of fear in his eyes. It seems Landale is cautious or apprehensive about something, further deepening the mystery surrounding him.

Did he truly catch on so quickly that I'm observing him? Aki wonders, his frustration growing. But as Yumi suggested, perhaps he's simply not in the mood today due to his disastrous performance yesterday. It seems unraveling the truth will be difficult today, he thinks, a sense of frustration taking hold.

As their journey continues, the absence of the Goblin Boss becomes apparent. Although a few goblin archers emerge from the surroundings, they avoid direct confrontation, opting instead to shoot arrows at the group before swiftly retreating. Aki deduces that these archers may be attempting to delay their progress, allowing the Goblin Boss to catch up later.

After a long day of walking, Aki becomes impatient with the lack of progress in both his dilemmas: Landale and the Goblin Boss. Suddenly, an idea strikes him - a way to interrogate Landale without raising suspicion.

The first part of their journey serves as a test for the new graduates. They must choose between two paths. The eastern route offers an easier road, thanks to the abundance of humans and well-guarded trade routes. On the other hand, the western path is seldom chosen due to the presence of monsters - still weak, but with mid-level enemies that could pose a significant challenge. Their goal is simple: reach the capital, where they will receive their mission based on the performance and chosen route. Aki silently ponders this plan.

Deciding to initiate a conversation with Landale, Aki begins, observing Landale almost jump in fear at the sound of his name. "So, Landale," he starts, his eyes fixed on him. "Are you accompanying us to the capital?"

Clearing his throat, Landale replies in a near-whisper, "Y-yes. If you'll have me, of course," his voice faltering somewhat.

Aki continues, "This path will take us at least a week to traverse. We shouldn't underestimate the Goblin Boss, as we are likely to face stronger opponents."

"Yes," Landale mutters, "I will do my best to assist."

"Very well," acknowledges Aki. "Tell me, what can you do?"

Regaining some semblance of dignity, Landale replies, "Similar to you, I am a combination of a wizard and a swordsman."

Aki seeks clarification, "I meant, what is your specialty in terms of magic?"

While Landale ponders, Aki scrutinizes him closely, noticing that his actions do not resemble those of someone concealing information but rather someone genuinely contemplating his strengths.

After a few moments, Landale finally responds, "Perhaps you're tired of hearing this, Aki, but like you—Scorching Ray, Sickening Ray, Magic Missile, Symbol of Deto-"

Interrupting, Aki interjects, "What about Detect Thoughts?"

"Ah, yes, of course," Landale replies. "As I mentioned, similar to you."

Aki nods, ending the conversation. It is at this moment that he notices something truly suspicious. The enormous sigh of relief he hears from Landale fully reveals how uncomfortable he is with Aki's probing. It's enough to rule out the idea that Landale is merely depressed.

Careful not to reveal his realization, Aki glances at Yumi, who had been listening to their conversation. She gives him a knowing smile, possibly having read his thoughts on the matter.

I'm not gaining any information from him, Aki thinks, realizing that Landale probably told the truth about what he was asked but remains guarded when speaking to him. This means someone else must talk to him and try to extract information, he concludes, exchanging a knowing grin with Yumi.

Suddenly, Yumi's expression changes to a frown, and she swiftly turns around, raising her shield in response to an ambush by goblins. Aki quickly erects a barrier as a barrage of arrows harmlessly falls to the ground.

"Oh, shi - " Landale exclaims, quickly taking cover behind Yumi.

Aki prepares to counterattack, but the goblins have already retreated.

An idea strikes Aki, and he lowers his barrier, determined to take action. "Enough of this," he declares. "I'm going to scout ahead and identify potential ambush points. I'll set up some traps."

Aki exchanges a knowing look with Yumi, signaling their understanding. Sprinting ahead until Landale is out of earshot, Aki utilizes his Telepathic Bond ability to establish a mental connection with Yumi, which she promptly accepts.

"Yumi, refrain from speaking," Aki instructs through their telepathic link. "See if you can subtly gather information about Landale's intentions. I have a feeling he may be more dangerous than he appears. I am quite certain he attempted to probe my mind last night."

With their plan in motion, Aki continues his sprint ahead, a silent plea echoing in his mind.

Succeed, Yumi. Perhaps we can achieve two objectives with one action.
