Kitchen Crew, meet the lusty Cook and her scent charm

It emerges, after your first shift in the kitchens, that Fay, while not useless, is not really a net contributor to the effort. You're rather enjoying yourself, working alongside other Beavertail students under the direction of Cook and Second Cook. There's a washing song and a rinsing song and a drying song, and once the crew is into the rhythm, it's a bit like singing a round. Unlike Minerval, where you were most likely to get acquainted with other scholars during lessons, subject study, or magical practice, Beavertail has a practice of mixing scholars, instructors, staff and stewards higgledy-piggledy as part of House Service.

"What if you're not feeling social?" you ask Susan Quaffle, who has a shift in the kitchen crew beside you. Fay is elsewhere, doing some service more suitable to her talents.

Susan, sensibly, has her hair tied back and a long, broad work apron up front. As do you and most of the crew.

"Quiet ones? Beast care," Susan says. "Or polishing. All that wood, you know. Library runs. Preparing materials for practical lesson. Tending the hearths. Night crew on laundry. Crêche for the little ones isn't very talky, really." She smiles. "Learned a lot of silly little spells there that come in useful more than you might expect."

"Oh?"

"Babies aren't the only ones who make sudden soppy messes," Susan says. "I've made a lot of use of Tergeo" As she pronounces the word, she turns up her palm and snaps her fingers. A tiny whirlwind of cleansing mist enwraps her hand until she snaps her wrist to shake it off. "Like that, before running off to lesson or to meal. Like that, I mean, but your whole body and robes." She laughs. "Cleans tables and floors, but it doesn't really make them shine. Still, clean is half the battle."

There's a gentle twitter of flute notes above, a flicker in the lights, and a vibration in the floor.

"Shift's over, dearies!" Cook says. "Lawrence, dear lad, did you...? Oh yes. Don't blush, right this way, you lovely boy."

Susan laughs. "Cook likes to get to know the first-years. Fancies herself an instructress."

"She is," says Sandevin. "I'm the better for it."

"You here for me?" Susan asks the more senior Prefect.

"Afraid so, Quaffle," Sandevin says. "Gremlins under the roof of the east wing."

"Bother," Susan says. "Eaves guardians hate that. Best rout them now before they get any further and start chewing on wands and frightening the familiars."

"Come, my lady, your hour has arrived!" Sandevin says. "Sorry to cut in, Woodbine, I'll give her back in one piece, promise you. Ta." He blows a kiss and scurries off with Susan Quaffle in tow, still wearing her apron and headscarf.

You raise an eyebrow. Tease, tease, tease. You fold away your apron and untie your headscarf. Some of the crew from the kitchen shift are out in the refectory taking tea. You draw yourself a dipper of water, roll your shoulders, and sigh. Wash, rinse, dry, put away. All is right with the world until next time.

"There, there, Lawrence," you hear Cook from round a corner. "If you can give me two goes so quickly, you'll be fine! Go have some tea and biscuit, there's a good fellow."

Lawrence tiptoes out into the kitchen, washes his hands and face in the corner sink, and joins the rest of the crew for tea.

"Ah, Miss Woodbine," Cook says, all cheery smile and dough-soft face. "Good to have you with us. How are you liking the House?"

You give her an easy smile back. "I'm happy to be at Beavertail," you say. "I see you keep people busy, but it's nice working together."

"Many hands make light work!" Cook says. "And I'm much happier here than I'd be at one of the other houses. I hear from Sophronia in Draconis that her work blows all hot and cold. First it's do, do, do, do! Then it's 'Fancy Banquet! Clear the kitchen for the Headmistress!'. Rackman in Minerval, well, he says it's steady, but nobody much cares for anything other than that it's food. Nary a thank-you. And Pyrope in Leontes, well, Housemaster is also a food conjuror, but Firetail lets her run her kitchen like a queen. She sent me Second Cook, and that's worked out rather well. Rather."

"I'm happy you like what you do," you say. "I didn't really know Rackman, in Minerval. I think Fay was friendly with him. She has a sweet tooth, and Minerval does a lot of fasting for this, abstain from that, and Fay was not all on board."

"Fay's a sweet dumpling," Cook says. "I saw her trying so hard. I told her to come see me if she wanted a tumble. Oh, begging your pardon, Miss Woodbine, if that's alright, I know you two are as tight as that!" She hooks her little fingers together.

You laugh. "We are. But Fay told me. She'll be by. It was so distracting, Fay said. Cook smells like apple tart and cinnamon. She was practically drooling."

"Ah ha ha!" Cook says. "So that was her trouble. My charm took her a little hard, dear girl."

"Your charm?" you ask.

"Yes. It's a little love charm, in a way," Cook says. "When I'm hungry for a tumble and so are you, I smell like your favorite food."

"Oh," you say.

"What, dear?" Cook says.

"You smell like Fay."
