Chapter 13

What happens during the day?
Kevin ties up loose ends and wishes himself to school
Kevin set Jessica's body down on the floor of her closet, watching uncomfortably as it spasmed and twitched, occasionally letting out a grunt or unsettling moan. He assumed it was caused by some sort of random impulses sent out by her mind after he had stripped her of her senses. He could have left her on the floor, she couldn't seriously hurt herself with his wish in place, but he would have been able to see her from his room and she was unsettling, like something from a horror game.
He let out a heavy sigh as he swung the closet door shut. He really hadn't wanted things to turn out like this. If she had just cooperated with him, things would have been so much easier. He would have messed with her a bit, sure; she deserved that after the way she'd treated people over the years, but he never would have done anything close to what he was doing now. This was just brutal.
He didn't really have a choice though. He couldn't wish for her to want to obey him, or, at least, it wouldn't work if he did. He couldn't change her mind with magic. He could warp it though, or in this case, break it. He had to make her want to serve him and make her truthfully promise to do so. Her own unbreakable word would be her prison. It was the only way he had to keep himself safe.
Pushing all of that aside as best he could, Kevin shifted his thinking to the day ahead. He might be a geek, but like most teenagers, he rarely actually looked forward to school. Today was different though; today he was in charge. The cheerleaders, the jocks, the teachers, every girl at school; he could control all of them with a sentence. He didn't want to go too far on his first day though, just test the waters. He had a lifetime of power ahead of him, better to start small, relatively at least.
With a grin, he cleared his throat and said, "I wish I was arriving at school as I usually do."
The first thing Kevin noticed was that he was definitely not stepping off the bus like he usually did. He was, in fact, stepping on the brake of a high-end SUV as it pulled into a spot in the school's student lot. The vehicle lurched forward as he slammed down on the brake in his surprise, and a startled high-pitched yelp came from the passenger seat.
Looking over to see where the sound had come from, he found a petite Asian girl who looked to be about his age. Looking up at him, she said, "Um, mind warning me the next time you're gonna do that?"
Completely unsure of his situation, Kevin replied, "Uh, sorry. My foot slipped."
"You're such a klutz," she chuckled, shaking her head. "I'm surprised Mom and Dad even got you a car, especially one this nice," she continued in a teasing tone as she unbuckled her seat belt. Before Kevin could figure out what the girl was talking about, or even who she was, she leaned over, gave him a quick sisterly hug, and said, "Thanks for the ride bro!" Without waiting for a reply she threw open the door and hopped out, closing it behind her as she took off toward the school, her long blue hair trailing behind her.
"Yeah, no problem..." Kevin replied absently as he stared at the now empty passenger seat. Something weird was definitely going on. Kevin was pretty sure he'd remember having an SUV, and damn sure he'd remember having a cute Asian sister. The weirdest part is that he knew that he didn't wish for either, which made where they came from a complete mystery.
His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on his door. Turning to his window, he found Chris Anderson staring him in the face. That's wasn't an easy feat, given the size of the vehicle Kevin had found himself in, but Chris wasn't a small guy. Chris was on the football team; he smashed into guys for fun, on and off the field. The oddest thing was that he had a relaxed smile on his face and seemed to be waiting for Kevin.
Cautiously, Kevin cracked his window and, as casually as he could manage, asked, "Uh, hey, what's up?"
Chris started to rock back and forth on his feet in impatience, "Come on man, let's go. I'd like to actually see my girlfriend before class starts."
He seemed to be in a bit of a hurry, but not openly hostile. To the contrary, he seemed willing to put himself out to wait for Kevin. Not sure how long this good will would last, and secure in the fact that he could wish himself to safety if it was some kind of trap, Kevin said, "Uh, sure, be right there." He rolled up his window and, after a short hunt for his backpack, climbed out of the truck to join Chris.
After Kevin locked what was apparently his SUV, Chris looked around and asked, "Hey, where's Jess?"
Kevin panicked for a moment, then it registered that the question had been genuine rather than accusatory. An image of Jess's limp, twitching form came to Kevin, but he pushed into the back of his mind and managed to say, "She's, uh, sick."
"Huh, that sucks," Chris said, starting toward school. "She'll miss the practice game."
"Uh, yeah," Kevin agreed, matching the larger teen's pace.
"You alright, man?" the football player asked, turning to Kevin. "You've been saying 'uh', like, a ton."
Kevin cleared his throat to cover the 'uh' he was about to utter, and said, "Maybe I'm catching whatever Jessica has."
Chris put some space between them and said, "Hey, man don't get me sick."
"I'm pretty sure I'm not contagious," Kevin replied, actually glad to have a bit of space. Before Chris could reply, they reached their presumed destination, the popular clique.
To Kevin's surprise, they were both greeted warmly; high-fives and friendly greetings from the guys, and brief hugs and strangely appraising looks from the girls.
Brad 'Thundercock' Myers, stepped out of the crowd and clapped Kevin on the shoulder, the football player's strength shaking him, but not doing any real damage. Smirking, he tilted his head toward the cheerleaders and conspiratorially whispered, "Kev, buddy, you gotta choose one to bed already. Trust me, I know how fun it is to play the field, but we've both gotta settle down. They're starting to get ****, and not the good kind. I saw Lauren looking at a fucking nerd the other day."
Kevin couldn't respond; he had no idea how, no frame of reference. He was a nerd. Football players were supposed to make his life miserable, not treat him like their buddy. Cheerleaders were supposed to mock him, not eye him up. And he definitely, definitely wasn't supposed to have a cute sister and a nice SUV.
Under his breath, Kevin muttered, "I wish I knew what the hell is going on."
What the hell is going on?
