Enjoying dinner?
Kaya tells them more about her culture and makes an announcement.
Soon enough, Steve called Jan and Kaya to the dining room for dinner. He dished up the spaghetti as they came in chatting. “Wow, it looks so nice and has plenty of room, both private and collective,” Jan said about the church.
Kaya nodded, “Yes, little self-contained units for each of the couples to have private space and a large enough area for us to hang out together.”
“Did you show her where we want to build a little glade?” Steve asked.
Kaya nodded, “Jan thinks it would be nice and has pointed out some places that would be good for garden beds.”
Jan pulled up a seat and sniffed the dish, “Oh, this smells so good. Yeah, plenty of room for gardens. We could almost be self-sufficient,” she said. “I might chat to Gen about it all tomorrow. I’m sure both Gen and Kay would be eager.”
Kaya nodded, “They already see you both as part of our herd, so yes, I think they will be.”
Jan paused as she put pepper onto her spaghetti, “Kaya, I know herds are important in your culture, but can you tell us more what it means? I mean, in general terms, so we can understand.”
Kaya took a mouthful and paused herself, “Oh, wow, this is very nice,” she said with a mouthful of food. Steve laughed, sometimes forgetting that most of these things were new experiences for Kaya. “Well, for us, a herd is a family, bigger than what you have. Back home, our herd had about twenty centaurs and an orc. I suppose it is a bit like extended family here, but we are very close.”
“And,” Jan paused again, “Is it normal for a father to bed his child’s girlfriend?” she asked.
Kaya smiled, “We do not bond the way you do. You and Steve are my Hi’yet. I care very much for you both. It is akin to dating here. But that does not mean that we are exclusive, and if you find a good pairing for fun or for making children, that is as important. So, it is not unknown to have such things occur.”
Jan blushed, “You think your father and I make a good pairing?”
Steve couldn’t help but chuckle, “Jan, our girlfriend is here, having dinner with us tomorrow. I’m going to be servicing eight women while you are going to be with Kay and Gen. And you are still blushing,” he chided her.
“To answer your question,” Kaya said, scooping up some more pasta, “yes. You seem to both match well in your enjoyment of each other and yes, I believe you will be a good match for making children. Actually, on the weekend, I asked Kyler to check for me.”
Both Steve and Jan blinked several times, “Oh, you are aware that Deer folk have an exceptional sense of smell, right?” They both shook their heads. “Oh, well, Deer folk can smell compatible people, biologically speaking. It is the main way they choose mates.”
Steve blinked several more times before saying, “Wait, Deer folk can smell how reproductively compatible two people are?” Kaya nodded, “And, wait, you asked Kyler to check. What did she say?”
“She said that although she does not have a lot of experience with humans, Jan and Gen smelt as though they would be very compatible,” Kaya explained.
Jan shot a look at Steve, “And you and Steve?” Jan asked.
Kaya blushed, and Steve realised it was the first time that he had seen her blush. The golden hues of her skin darkened for several moments before she said quietly, “Well, she said that we are already compatible,” she said.
“What do you mean already compatible?” Steve asked.
“I think I might be pregnant,” Kaya said, “But I want to wait until the pregnancy test later this week to be sure.”
Steve dropped his fork, “You, you might be pregnant?” he asked.
“Oh my God, congratulations,” Jan exclaimed. “I can’t believe it. It happened so quickly.”
Steve stood up and walked around the table to put a hand on Kaya’s torso abdomen before laughing at himself. “I guess I should be feeling more down here,” he said, reaching his hand under her flank. “Could it really?”
Kaya shuddered at his touch, “I haven’t told my parents yet. I wanted to wait until I was certain because although Deer folk have a very good sense of smell, it is not always certain. But Tytha agrees.”
Jan followed suit and walked over to Kaya, kissing her firmly on the lips, “We’re going to be parents,” she said excitedly. “You, I mean, you will be parents,” she added.
Kaya shook her head, “No, we will. You are both my Hi’yet. We are together in this and all things.”
Steve kissed both Kaya and Jan in turn. “I can’t believe this,” he said. “This is so, something.”
“Exciting?” Jan asked, “So, wow. Oh my God.” Jan paused for a long moment, “I know it’s early, but are we thinking of a Mythfolk name, an Earth name or a combination?”
Kaya looked towards Steve. “You heard me the other day if a boy, I like the name Stevare. Son of Steve.” She turned her head to look at Jan, “If a girl, I like Janettea, daughter of Jan. Or Jana for short.”
“Oh my God, Kaya, she won’t be mine by blood. Why not name her after you?” Jan asked.
Kaya smiled, “In our culture, we have naming traditions, but this isn’t a traditional herd. If I were to name her according to my culture, she would be Kyalantries. Granddaughter of Kyalantri, or Gentyker, grandson of Gentyren.”
“Wait, your father’s full name is Gentyren?” Jan asked. Steve laughed but didn’t say anything.
Kaya nodded, “Gentyren Yishop Ker. It means Gentyren, Lord of the herd.”
Jan blinked several more times, “Wait, lord as in leader or Lord as in Lord?” Jan asked.
