Backstory & Origin of Powers

In 1712, during the Genroku era, Ren was the last heir of the Iga ninja clan, hunted to extinction by the Tokugawa shogunate for guarding a forbidden scroll: the Kagami no Jutsu (Mirror Art). The scroll, said to be written by the tengu of Kurama, allowed passage between the human world and the Kagami-kai—a parallel realm of liquid mirrors and infinite reflections.

To save her clan’s knowledge, Ren performed the Kagerō Ritual: she slit her shadow under a blood-red eclipse and bound it to the scroll. The ritual killed her… and reborn her as Kagerō, a living mirage who exists between realities. For 300 years, she has silently eliminated threats to Japan’s balance—corrupt daimyo, foreign spies, yakuza sorcerers, and even rogue tengu—never seen, never named, only felt as a shimmer in the corner of the eye.
