Chapter 8 by CharlestheCrungo

When Maynard comes back, what is her plan?

Julie doesn't wait to find out.

Sitting in the room alone, Julie starts to feel increasingly anxious. For the past couple of weeks she had been so alone and she finally had human contact. Despite Captain Maynard and her team being in the other room, she found her self feeling deeply isolated. After a half hour had gone by she couldn't take it anymore and got up, heading to the other room. The Captain had told her to wait so they must be discussing something important... But simply sitting there was not helping her mental state. Julie figured they wouldn't mind if she stayed just outside the room, where she could hear them clearer and feel their presence. When she got to the doorway of the next room, she sat outside by the door, at least happy she could hear their voices...

Julie could hear Captain Maynard speaking, catching the end of what she was saying. "-and command wants us to continue the mission. Based on reports from the initial **** team, many Pseudosects emerged in that location, so a path to the lab must be there. If we can find it... Perhaps we can end this whole mess."

Lab? What was she talking about... Maybe some sort of research base set up during the initial invasion? As Julie pondered, she could hear another voice, she thinks it was the redheaded soldier. She had a haughty voice, giving Julie the impression of someone who though a lot about themselves and less about others. "Fuck that! We already lost Irena, Natalie... Minami... And now command expects the four of us to storm the lab ourselves?! Are they insane?!"

Another voice chimes in, it was the black woman. She had a strong and husky voice, sounding like someone you could depend on. "And what do you propose we do Rebecca? Disobey orders and go rogue? You know what the company will do if they catch us..." A tense moment of silence followed, then Captain Maynard spoke, a strong note of command in her voice. "Either way, we are screwed, literally or figuratively, and you ladies knew that when you signed on. So all we have to do is find the damn lab and get the damn samples, and get this shit done, you hear me?" The other three replied with a "Yes ma'am".

"Good..." Captain Maynard continued. "Now as for how we accomplish this, I believe we should contact Team 2, see what their status is and if we can link up, search for this entrance together. Thoughts?" Rebecca was the first to speak up, scoffing loudly. "Do you really think we can rely on Captain Jun? She is just gunna boss us around and bumble us into a nest or something, I wouldn't even be surprised if their whole team was already caught! Why, everyone knows why she was promoted to- oOOMPH... ALEXIS WHAT THE FUCK?!"

"Knock it off Rebecca..." Alexis responded. "Captain, I agree that contacting the other team is probably the best plan, but I also doubt they will be able to help much... I think we should contact command and pull back. I am not suggesting we give up on the mission, but with our current forces... I doubt we could succeed. We need more help on this."

Captain Maynard sighed heavily. "Unfortunately for us, command is adamant about us finishing this mission before Operation Bug-Stomp. No reinforcements will be coming, the Army can't notice our movements, and if command sends more troops it will be hard to mask so... We use what we have. Command needs that sample before anyone else gets their hands on it" Julie was starting to get confused... Didn't the Captain say her team was reforming recon, searching for survivors? What mission were they talking about? What was this lab? And who was 'command'? A knot of uncertainty took hold in Julie's heart...

"Hm, then we have **** but to contact Captain Jun, splitting us into separate teams was a stupid plan. What about Teams 3 and 4? Will they be of any assistance?"

Captain Maynard was silent for a moment... "Team 4 is gone... Last contact indicated they were swarmed by some large Pseudosect, and were scattered.... Picked off one by one. Team 3 went to rescue some and got attacked, no contact since. Some may have survived, but we have no way of knowing their fate." The four women were silent again, all in thought... Some of these 'team's must have had people they knew...

Olivia was the one to break the silence, posing a new question to the Captain. "Um, ma'am? What about the civilian? Obviously we can't take her along with us but.... Leaving her here all alone is... Well... I worry we might not be able to help her..." Julies eyes went wide and she had to clamp her hand on her mouth to stop from shouting out. What the hell? They wouldn't... Couldn't... Just leave her here alone! They were supposed to save her! This was.... Julie felt dizzy, a hard knot in her chest pulling her down...

Captain Maynard didn't speak right away.... But she sounded upset when she did. "Well... She will have to remain here. I already alerted command about her, and they said it was too risky... The army knows where she is and will send someone but... Well it is unlikely they will arrive soon, the Army is refusing to fly helicopters over the city after the loss of those three last night." She paused, "Julie will have to remain here, once we get the sample we can rendezvous here and then escort her out."

Julie feels all the hope once more crashing down, but this time.... Instead of despair she feels... Anger! These were supposed to be here heroes and they were just leaving her here? Alone? They... No! They couldn't do that! And she wouldn't stay, she would...

She would...
