Chapter 40

What's next?
Joining up with the Group
Draco took a moment to survey his surroundings as the dust settled and the labyrinth quieted after his victory over the golems.
The eerie silence was almost deafening now, but something caught his attention—a new, dimly lit, and unmistakably open pathway that he was certain hadn’t been there before.
His eyes followed the path, leading to a grand staircase spiraling upward, carved intricately from the labyrinth's stone.
Deciding there was no time to waste, Draco adjusted his pouch, still feeling the faint warmth of the crystal he had tucked away.
With one last glance at the rubble-strewn battlefield, he began his ascent, each step echoing faintly in the cavernous space.
As he climbed, he **** himself to focus. His ears, still heightened by his dragon instincts, picked up faint sounds reverberating through the stone walls.
It was subtle at first, but as he ascended, the noises grew louder—sharp cracks and faint echoes, the unmistakable sound of stone breaking.
His eyes narrowed as his pace quickened, his mind racing. "That’s close," he thought, his heart thudding in his chest.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was up ahead. The noise seemed to come from higher in the labyrinth, growing clearer with each step he took.
"That's where Yuki and Venetia should be "
Draco's hands flexed instinctively at his sides, his battered body tense but ready.
Eventually, Draco reached the top of the staircase, his body aching from the previous battle.
The staircase opened up into a vast corridor, looking like the one he had seen many times in this labyrinth.
Still, he focused intently on the distant sounds, his mind straining to analyze them.
A deep, resonating crash of Stoen could be heard followed by heavy movement.
His pulse quickened. What could this be...? His thoughts raced, spinning with possibilities as his mind desperately tried to piece together the clues.
What could be close to Yuki and Venetia in this Duengon?
Suddenly, a chilling realization struck him like a lightning bolt.
The Minotaur.
Draco pushed forward, his footfalls echoing through the massive corridor as he ran, his every sense focused on the sounds that guided him.
The sound of crashing stones grew louder with each passing moment. He could hear the weight of whatever moved pressing on his instincts.
At first, the noises had come from above him, distant and faint, almost like distant thunder rumbling across the labyrinth.
But now, the shift was undeniable. The sound began to descend, moving closer, closer to his level.
The stone grinding noise grew more distinct, it was almost directly on the same plane as Draco.
Then, the sound began to shift again, this time below him, as if the source had moved deeper into the labyrinth's
Draco's mind raced as he processed the new realization."Venetia and Yuki... they must have ventured deeper into the labyrinth to escape or confront the Minotaur",
he thought as his pace quickened.
The corridors twisted like a living thing, trapping him in a maze that seemed to mock his every move.
The sound of crashing stone grew louder, but with each turn, it felt like the Minotaur was slipping further away.
" I can’t waste any more time", he thought, as he sprinted down another hall. He could feel the walls closing in on him, the very air thick with the tension of the labyrinth.
He leaped over a pit that opened suddenly in the ground, narrowly avoiding a trap.
The moment he landed, he gritted his teeth and pushed on, but his focus never wavered from the sounds ahead.
Another dead end.
“Dammit!” Draco cursed, slamming his fist into the stone wall in frustration. But even in his anger, he knew he couldn’t waste time dwelling on it.
He turned on his heel and raced back, looking for another path, all while keeping his ear trained on the sounds of the Minotaur.
With every **** twist and sprint, the sound of the Minotaur grew louder. Draco's steps quickened as he ran through another corridor.
Draco slowed his pace, his sharp senses alert to the subtle change in the labyrinth beneath his feet.
The floor, once made of meticulously crafted stone blocks, had suddenly shifted.
Now, only a few meters ahead, it was smooth, natural stone—nothing like thesurface he'd been navigating before.
His eyes narrowed, scanning the area with caution.
"Is this a trap?" he muttered to himself, his instincts kicking in. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up.
But after a moment of hesitation, he took a careful step forward, testing the ground.
The stone felt solid, unyielding, and there was no immediate threat or movement that suggested danger.
Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. The sound of the Minotaur's heavy footsteps reverberated clearly through the stone, now just beneath him.
The sounds were unmistakable. The beast was right below him.
"It’s almost like... like there's a cave underneath," Draco mused.
The realization hit him with sudden clarity. "Venetia and Yuki must be down there, fighting the Minotaur. That's why the sounds are so loud now."
Standing on the smooth stone floor, Draco paused, his eyes scanning every inch of his surroundings.
He searched for any cracks, seams, or hidden mechanisms that could reveal a downward pathway.
Ears twitching, picking up the echoes of the battle below
Despite his focus, there was nothing. No hidden door, no ladder, no staircase. Just the unbroken surface of the natural stone beneath his feet.
Clenching his fists, frustration was beginning to bubble within him.
"Looks like I have to make my own path," Draco muttered.
Flames began to flicker from the corners of his lips, casting a faint glow in the dim labyrinth
Smoke coiled from his nostrils, rising in thin, twisting streams.
"Fire Magic: Dragon Breath,"
His chest expanded as the heat gathered, burning hotter with every passing moment.
The air around him shimmered from the intensity, and the faint scent of scorched stone filled the corridor.
The fire roared as it erupted from his mouth, a fiery stream of orange and red that consumed the stone floor beneath him.
The labyrinth trembled from the sheer **** of the attack, cracks forming and spreading rapidly across the surface.
Beneath his feet the Stone began to weaken as it glowed red from the fire attack.
With a deafening crack, the weakened stone shattered, collapsing under his feet.
Dust and smoke billowed upward, momentarily obscuring Draco's vision. He shielded his eyes with both of his arms as he began to fall.
Sparks danced in the air like fireflies, and smoke curled at the ceiling shrouding the cavern in a fiery haze as Draco made his dramatic entrance.
The echoes of his attack still lingered, rumbling faintly in the stone walls around him.
He felt the rush of air against his skin as he descended.
As the smoke finally dissipated, the battlefield came into clear view, revealing the chaos that had unfolded.
Draco opened his eyes, his glowing, cutting through the haze as he took in the scene before him.
Yuki and Venetia stood a short distance away, bodies tense from the ongoing fight. Their expressions shifted dramatically as they saw him.
Shock flashed across their faces, quickly replaced by relief.
Yuki’s lips curled into a small, tired smile, while Venetia’s posture eased ever so slightly:
“Draco!”
Meanwhile, Draco smirked but didn’t respond immediately, as his attention was locked on the Minotaur.
The towering beast turned toward him. Its nostrils flared, releasing twin streams of steam as it lowered its head, the sharp curve of its horns gleaming in the dim light.
Draco landed heavily on the stone floors.
He gritted his teeth and straightened himself, ignoring the dull ache that lingered.
Shaking off the discomfort, he quickly scanned the battlefield, his eyes locking on Yuki and Venetia.
Relief washed over him as he noted they only bore scratches and small cuts, their injuries minimal compared to what they could have been.
"Everything all right?" he asked, his voice strained, though he tried to mask it with a nonchalant tone.
Venetia couldn’t hide the sharp edge in her voice as she practically spat, "You should be asking that about yourself!
Her arm shot out, pointing at his Wounds. "What the hell happened?!"
He gave a grin, though it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Don’t worry, don’t worry," he said with **** confidence, lifting a thumb in what was supposed to be a reassuring gesture.
But it came across more as a **** attempt to downplay the situation. "I had a little rundown with some stone Golems, nothing more, I’m feeling better than ever."
Yuki, who had been silently observing the exchange, couldn’t hold back the light smirk that tugged at her lips. "You look worse than ever,"
Rolling back his neck with a sharp crack, his eyes locked on the enormous Minotaur ahead of them, its hulking frame blocking their only escape route.
"We can argue about my looks later," he said,
The Minotaur wasn’t going to wait for them to figure out their drama. "First, let’s get out of here."
