Who will Doctor Tolstoy and/or Zauber encounter inside the tower?
Janet meets Lockhart, who helps her find the Reality Crystal (ENF Nightmare)
With the door opened wide, Doctor Janet Tolstoy stepped through and into the main foyer of the Tower of Total Defeat. It looked surprisingly lived in and modern inside, with a greeting area, a chandelier, and everything... She supposed that the aliens here must culturally be not so different from humans. That meant they could probably be reasoned with. The thought soothed Dr. Tolstoy, but only a bit... after all, the danger had never been the inhabitants of the tower, but rather, the undead monstrosity close on her trail. "Who lives here? I must speak with this tower's owner, immediately!" The doctor shouted at the top of her lungs, showing little decorum... after all, if she began blindly searching the tower, Zauber and his zombies would be on her before she could find the darn thing. If someone really was living here, perhaps they'd hear her plea and take her right to it? The superstitions of this place as a place of danger didn't seem to lend themselves to that possibility, but... they'd understand, once she explained that survival of all of humanity was at stake, perhaps?
The blond doctor narrowed her eyes as a figure stumbled sleepily out of the shadows between two pillars, yawning mightily. The woman that emerged looked like just that: a woman. An ordinary human woman. She was dressed up like some outdated safari explorer, but other than that, she looked perfectly ordinary... if a little chubby. Weirdest of all, she was clutching onto a long, white-sheeted pillow, as if she'd been sleeping back there when the doctor woke her up. Janet found herself with all sorts of different questions, but with no time to ask any of them. "I have no time to waste. Please... tell me where to find the Reality Crystal." She couldn't imagine this woman was the tower's owner (not that the tower's real owner, Oda, would have looked much more authoritative), but the woman was at least dressed as an explorer... Her knowledge could come in handy.
"Well sure, love! I can take you right to it... it's just downstairs..." The sleepy brunette gave another long yawn into one glove, then fluffed her pillow, as though preparing to lie back down.
The doctor waved one hand urgently, then snapped her fingers, encouraging the woman to, under no circumstances, fall asleep right now. "Lead me to it, now! There's a monster outside named Zauber... He's going to kill us all if we don't hurry! I'm the last human left alive... besides maybe you..." The woman's labcoat swished dramatically behind her as she began to search the room for a staircase downward.
"Actually, I'm a demon now... My name's Lockhart."
Dr. Tolstoy raised one eyebrow behind her oval-rimmed glasses. "I don't know what you mean by that, Ms. Lockhart, but in some ways, I'm a demon myself. I am Dr. Janet Tolstoy. I doomed the human race, but I'm also our only chance left at salvation... but only if you lead me to that crystal, immediately!"
The explorer girl nodded sleepily, then spun on her heels, threatening to fall over into a dizzy pile as she did; the good doctor steadied her by placing both hands on her shoulders. "Onward... march!"
"This is the Survival Log of Doctor Janet Tolstoy. After entering the tower, I came upon the mysterious Ms. Lockhart, who ensures me that she can lead me to the Reality Crystal. I don't know if I can trust her... but I have no other option. She described herself as a demon. For all I know, her efforts are an attempt to trick or capture me. I'm following from a distance for now. If the worst comes to pass, I have my gun in my bag... I won't hesitate to-"
"It's in heeeere!" The explorer had stopped in front of a crude wooden door and began to wave one hand above her head excitedly. She pushed the door open gently, then stepped aside. "See? Dreams can be pretty nice sometimes."
The doctor momentarily questioned the meaning behind those words, but forgot them almost instantly, once the brilliant light of the Reality Crystal poured out from the tower's subterranean room. She adjusted her glasses with an expression of awe on her face, then stepped forward past Lockhart, practically stumbling into the room. She'd been doubtful before- this magic gemstone was her plan B, after all- but now that she'd laid eyes upon it herself, she could believe the legends. The supernatural power of this tower's treasure might just be capable of stopping Zauber. The doctor approached the stone and extended both hands to clutch it, as its light reflected off of her glasses.
"Ah, I should mention, Janet! It has to stay in the tower. You should tell it whatever it needs right now, before you return home." Lockhart explained this from the door's entrance, where she'd propped a pillow in the corner to go back to sleep. "I'd like to see how it all turns out but..." She covered her mouth with one hand again and yawned, by way of explanation. She smacked her lips sleepily a few more times, then lay her chubby cheek onto the downy pillow. "Goodnight~"
Dr. Tolstoy felt somewhat offended that her successful mission's one potential observer was going to sleep on her, but she dismissed the thought quickly enough and refocused. "I shouldn't go crazy with this... All I need is to banish Zauber. I'll write Zauber out of existence and then restore the earth... Hear me, Reality Crystal! Undo my past sins and restore those who suffered because of them! Whatever hell I need endure to make this right, I'll endure it! But you must banish Zauber and put the earth back to its proper state!" She beseeched the crystal audibly, while freely admitting to herself how goofy it made her feel to do so.
"You've got to spread both hands and hold them over your head, or it won't woooork!" Lockhart called out helpfully from the other side of the room in a sing-song voice.
The doctor grit her teeth, than followed those instructions, holding both gloved hands out like a mad-scientist begging for lightning. In some ways, she wasn't too far removed from that trope. "I beseech you, crystal: destroy Zauber and restore earth! Oh, and also put me back onto earth once it's done!" She added that last bit a little selfishly... she didn't know if she could repair her shuttle and wasn't eager to spend another few years finding the proper parts for it, as well as the basic sustenance to live that long.
Or could the reality crystal give her all of the food that she wanted, regardless?
She had just enough time to think about it before she was poofed out of the tower and back to earth...
"Good luck, Doctor! I'll come find you in a little while..." The cursed explorer gave another long yawn, then fell almost immediately into another long nap.
What does Doctor Tolstoy find once she's back on earth?
