Chapter 38

Returning to the party then?
Its wrapping up.
The walk back to the dining room was mostly silent. Oliver seemed in thought, Norman was satisfied, and I had no reason to start a conversation. We walked back to the stairwell and through the twisting hallways. I tried to remember the path, but mansions become mazes once they are big enough, 'This is why I didn't have buildings like this. Uncountable directions of attack as well as the ability to get lost in your own house.'
As we turned the corner to the dining room, we heard a fierce argument happening within. We all looked to each other and shook our heads in collective disappointment of the children (even though the youngest of them was just over 20). We reached the halfway point to the door when it was pushed open from the other side.
Nathaniel shoved the doors open, shouting over his shoulder, "You pathetic cowards can sit here and eat all you want. I am not letting father give away our birthright to some common hermit who showed up out of thin air!"
Norman shouted in response, "How many times do I have to tell you to be more soft on the doors? The next one you break is coming out of your funds." Nathaniel turned to us shocked, though Norman simply walked past him back into the dining hall. Nathaniel turned to me in a mixture of confusion and anger, which I responded to with a smirk and a slight nod before walking past him as well.
Norman simply went back to his seat and grabbed himself a serving of the desert that had been served. I gave Oliver a nod and we followed suit. The table had descended to silence after our entrance, and the only sounds were the clinking of silverware from us three, the others stunned at our return.
After a few moments of enjoyable silent eating, Norma spoke up to her father, "Well?"
He finished the food in his mouth, patted it with a handkerchief, and looked to her. "Well, what?"
She blinked a few times in surprise, and Kyle was the one who continued, "Well, did he do it?"
He gave a nod, "Ah, yes. He did." With that he went back to eating. The table went into silent panic, all of the children trying to communicate with each other through gestures. Millana looked at me with a curious expression, seemingly long lost in thought.
Nathaniel broke this round of silence, still standing by the door. "So, you're building him his church, then?" His voice was filled with venom.
Norman didn't look up from his meal this time, "I made a promise did I not?" He gave an upward glance, "Don't tell me I raised you so poorly as to not hold your word." His tone made it almost seem like a threat, more than any form of question. Nathaniel fumed without words before turning and leaving. The woman who was with him looked back and forth between Nathaniel and Norman, before Norman waver her off and she too left.
The rest of them didn't last much longer. Kyle elbowed Mason to get an excuse to leave, and Norman glared the out of the room. Norma stated she was tired, and left with her follower close in tow. Millana made no move to leave, however Norman gave a look to Isabell.
Isabell gave a nod in return and cleared her throat, "My lady, perhaps we should retire for the eve as well?"
Millana snapped out of her daze, blushing as she realized she had been staring at me that whole time. "Ah, yes. I suppose we should." She turned back to me and gave a curtsy, "It was lovely to have you here, Mathew."
I gave a nod and a smile in response, "And it was lovely to be hosted by you as well." She gave a nod and left the room with Isabell close behind.
After a few more moments of us finishing our various meals, Norman placed down his silverware. He looked over to Oliver, "Sir Trust, that was your surname was it not?"
Oliver gave a small nod, "Indeed, son of William."
Norman had a strange look cross his face before he responded, "Yes... Indeed, William Trust was a good man." He paused for a moment, slightly chewing his cheeks as he thought of how to continue. "I understand that your previous condition was at fault of my children's actions." Oliver was about to speak when Norman held up his hand. "I have full intent to repay you, however I doubt I have anything worth what it cost."
Oliver seemed confident as he addressed Norman, "If I may, I believe I have something that should at least serve for now."
Norman gave a wave of his hand as he laid back into his chair, "By all means."
Oliver surprised me with his response, "I request you to grant a title, or at least petition for a title granting, to Mathew Kiegan."
Norman seemed as surprised as me, "A title for Mathew? This hardly seems a reward for yourself."
Oliver gave a slight shake of the head as he responded, "I myself am indebted to Mathew, as well as I believe he could do immeasurable good if granted the resources."
Norman gave a knowing chuckle, seemingly unconvinced of my morality. However, he responded positively, "Very well, I shall do my best to get Mathew a title. At the very least, I shall get him acknowledged."
Oliver stood up to give a bow, "Thank you, Lord Normn."
He turned his head to me, and I got the slight implication. "I suppose I shall now leave myself."
Does anything stop him from leaving?
