I follow Heather into her bedroom. I’ve been here before, of course, many times, but never like this—except in my dreams.

We’re not going to look up somewhere down the line and say, ‘Maybe I should have tried something else,’ because we have. Where we are now is good, and the things we wish had been different are part of what brought us to this ‘now.’ If you feel like you’ve been settling for second best before now, well, that should just make you appreciate me more, right?”

I can feel Heather relax against me. “Yeah,” she responds quietly. Then, a little louder, with the suggestion of a grin quivering in her voice: “And it should make you appreciate me more, too, right?”

“Baby,” I tell her, “every day I will ever have with you will be an opportunity to appreciate you even more, and I intend to dedicate myself to that. But with a woman like you, what man wouldn’t?”

Heather turns in my arms and holds me fiercely, kissing me passionately and possessively. I kiss her back with interest. She breaks off after a while and says in a low voice, “Don’t sell yourself short, love.” I love hearing her call me that. “What man wouldn’t? Maybe no real man, but my boyfriends didn’t. Most of them weren’t even trying—they just wanted me to appreciate them. You say that—it’s part of the reason I love you, because you say that and mean it. I know how rare you are, and how blessed I am.”
