Chapter 2 by TheUnfathomable TheUnfathomable

Which House have you been sorted into?

It's... a ram skull?

You open your palm to find your pin morphed into a shape you had not seen as an option. It appeared to be a bovid skull, angled forwards so that you were staring at it from slightly forward aerial view. It had two large, symmetrical black horns that spiraled, going backwards from the head before looping back forwards, ending by twisting away from the skull. Any gaps within the skull were filled with absolute blackness, a feature most apparent on the eyes, looking at which gave you a feeling of staring into a great void. Last but not least, a red pentagram was etched into the skull's forehead, with a texture that almost made it seem made of blood.

Looking down at the pin panicked, you have no idea what this means. Your concern only grows as all of the other students gather up into groups based on their new houses, leaving you standing awkwardly in the center. You look back down at your pin, almost wishing it to have changed so that you can go join a group and not become an odd one out at the start of your very first day, but the ram skull remains. You let out a disappointed sigh, resigning to your fate as you stare down at your hand, nodding to yourself. Of course this would be how it went. You were always the weird kid even before you found out you had magic, of course you would still be the weird kid, despite being in a literal fantasy world.

Raising your head, you are not surprised in the least to find you have become a center of attention for most people around. Many individuals look at you in confusion or interest, talking to each other in hushed voices. After a few moments, the headmaster raises an eyebrow at you before walking over. As he reaches you, you hold up the pin somewhat tiredly, hoping that there is some obvious reason for this that you just don't know because you are new to the wizarding world.

Despite your hopes, his eyebrows furrow in confusion as he looks at your pin. "Hmm, this is your pin? If this is a joke about switching pins around, I would say you can give up the joke now." He looks at you with an expression that suggests he would not punish you if that were the case. Alas, all you could do was give a shrug and a nod, not knowing in the least what you should do.

Venturing to speak, you ask him a question. "So... should I get another one? Or is there some 5th house you don't talk about because it's rare?"

He shakes his head, still locking his eyes upon the pin in deep thought. "No... A new pin shouldn't change the result, and we can't just hand you another anyway, they connect with you. And no, there is no secret house with an emblem of a ram skull." He looked up at you briefly, and you have the faintest thought that he didn't outright deny a 5th house, just that it wasn't a ram skull.

After letting out a thoughtful sigh he spoke again, "For now, I suppose you may stay in the guest housing until we get this situation sorted. Until then, I can only arrange for you to get your class list from a teacher at Orientation." He gave an apologetic shrug. "Until then, I may show you to a suitable room personally. I don't know how you may manage having to live in the high-quality guest chambers, without any roommate no less." He offered a slight chuckle, trying to put a positive spin on your situation.

Feeling the eyes of everyone upon you, you stiffly follow Frederic Hallgrave into the building proper. It was a good thing you went first, as the guest housing was barely down a hallway before the wing of rooms separated off. After walking down for but a movement, Hallgrave stopped at a seemingly random door and opened it for you, smiling as he waved you inside.

As you entered, he gave one last parting remark. "Do remember, Orientation will be starting soon within the grand hall. I understand you are under some... bizarre circumstance, but I do stress the importance of arrival." With a final nod, he closed the door and left you alone in the well furbished room.

Should you go?
