Chapter 9 by missphaedra missphaedra

What do you do now?

Investigate

Your curiosity compels you to find out what’s going on; besides, you think, you have no way of knowing how to keep safe if you don’t understand where the monster came from and how it appeared and vanished so suddenly. When you have a good idea what happened, you can make an informed decision. Something tells you the incident on the bus has sort of connection with the beast, and whatever’s going on, it’s not over yet.

You go through your college bag, taking out all but the essentials: books will only weigh you down, and you might need to run. You keep your water bottle, and the bag of crisps you put in your bag for a snack. You also retain your mobile, wallet and keys, although you are not sure any of them will help you – you have no way of knowing how far the chaos has spread. You leave everything else on the desk, hoping that you will live long enough to collect it later.

A quick look around tells you that of the few remaining students in the chemistry block, most appear to have left already, **** to flee the monstrous creature. Of those that remain, there are none you know particularly well.

You rise and take a deep breath, attempting to sound calm and confident as you address them.

“I’m going out to the physics block; I’ve go to know what’s going on. Do any of you want to come too?”

“You’re going out there, to where that thing came from?” asks a guy you don’t know, “Just out of curiosity? Are you mad?”

“Yeah,” agrees the blonde girl clutching his arm, “I’m staying here, there could be anything out there! Anyway, someone must be coming to help us – you know, the police or the army or someone.”

The others nod, murmuring agreement. With a sinking feeling, your fears are confirmed: you are going to have to investigate alone. You make one more effort.
“What makes you think we’re the only place this has happened? None of us know how or why that thing appeared, but for all we know, the whole country could be in chaos – the whole world, even. What makes you think this place is safe?” You indicate the chemistry building around you.

You shudder at your own suggestion, and the others pale a little.

“I’m... I’m still staying here,” says the girl again, less sure of herself now, “I’m just not risking it.”

“Fine then, I’m going alone,” you say, keeping your voice as level as possible, “Good luck to you all.”

And without looking back, you pick up your bag and head out of the door.

Where do you go?
