Chapter 10 by missphaedra missphaedra

Where do you go?

The physics block

You leave the chemistry block, and stride towards the wrecked physics building, attempting to look confident. You suspect that if you run, you’re at more risk of attracting unwanted attention, and it takes all your effort not to do so: being out in the open so soon after the demon’s attack unnerves you.

You pass the library on your right, and realise how far the pieces of rubble from the wreckage have spread. You try not to think about how much power and strength this must have taken, as you pick your way around sizeable lumps of broken masonry.
All too soon, you reach the physics block itself. The front is largely torn away, revealing the classrooms at the front. The power appears to have been lost when the creature attacked, and the corridor leading to the inner rooms is dark. You peer into the gloom, hoping to get an idea of the inside without having to risk life and limb. Something moves in the darkness; you are not sure whether it’s a human and you should call out, or another monster – in which case your only hope would be to run for your life. You desperately try and make out what it is: the wrong judgement could be the end for you.

Just as you are pretty sure it’s a human, and that it hasn’t noticed you, you hear a noise close behind you. A tall young man with reddish brown hair stumbles out from behind a tall pile of rubble. Forgetting the movement in the building, you turn to address him.

“Hey! Are you alright? Do you know what happened here?”

He slowly looks up at you, and what you see sends a chill down your spine. His eyes are not a natural colour; they glow slightly, in a deep shade of crimson, and as his gaze locks on you, you realise his expression is not one of fear or confusion, but one of all-consuming rage. You hear the sound of more movement from behind the rubble from which he emerged, and with dread you take in the sight of the creature that steps out behind him. It resembles the creature from the first attack, and although it is smaller, it still dwarfs the young man in front of it. Its deep red skin is taut over grotesquely large muscles, and the spikes that protrude from its body look wickedly sharp. From the fact that it’s not attacking the man, you guess that they are in some way linked. The monster turns its gaze to you, and with horrible certainty, you realise your only hope of survival is to flee.

You momentarily consider running into the physics building itself, but it could be unstable, and besides, you don’t know what’s in there. You take a deep breath and sprint as fast as you can back towards the relative safety of the chemistry block. As you drive yourself onwards, you feel your strength beginning to drain already, and you realise that by the time you reach the chemistry building, the creature may well have caught up with you. The library is much nearer, and you change course slightly, soon reaching the double doors of the building.

You throw the doors open, and as soon as you run inside, you begin to look for some way of jamming them shut. You shut and bolt the door, and drag a heavy desk over, but it doesn’t seem like enough. You glance around desperately, hoping for something better, but nothing presents itself. Suddenly you realise you can use one of the flimsier shelves: some of them have weak joints, and you might be able to break off a piece of wood to use. As you hear the thunderous steps of the monster outside, you push over a heavy set of shelving, throwing books across the floor. You’re in luck: the top shelf breaks off, providing you with a plank of wood, which you thrust through the door handles, holding them shut.

You are just in time, and as you step back, you see the doors judder with the immense **** of the demon trying to break them open. You realise that even with the added barricade, your defences are nowhere near enough to stop the demon. Your only hope is to escape out of the fire exits across the library. You turn, and begin to run once more, this time to the far end of the building. Your progress is slowed by the books strewn across the floor when you knocked over the shelving, and as you run, you hear one last resounding smash, and realise that the creature must have broken through the doors.

What do you do now?
