Chapter 10 - The Right To Live

Leon stepped cautiously into the NEST with his pistol held. When the lights came on, he saw the big Umbrella sign on the white wall.

According to the direction board, the North Area here was the base of the science research team working in the sewer system, with the development section on one side and the dormitory section on the other.

The door to the development section and the other to the central knot of the NEST, the Main Shaft, were locked, and both required the general staff clearance to unlock. So the available section for him to search was the dormitory.

Just before he was about to make his next move, he heard some strange noises coming from the radio, which has been silent since he left police station. It sounded like a conversation between two people, so he tuned the frequency and tried to capture it.

“...can save Sherry!” The voice was familiar but was distorted. He needed to tune it more accurately. And he eventually made it.

“...to the West Area to secure to G-Virus sample.” The voice was clear and it was Annette’s. So the G-Virus was in the West Area. Got it.

“What? Are you f-...Damn it!” That was Claire!

“Claire!” Leon spoke happily through the radio.

“Leon? You’re down here, too!?” Claire sounded like this was the most happy moment in her life, “It’s so good to hear you!”

“Me too! I’m in the North Area. You were saying ‘save Sherry’? What happened to her?” Leon was excited, but the wound on his shoulder was not and rebelled against him by being painful. He breathed hard to ease the pain.

“Sherry was infected...” Claire was a bit nervous, “But she can still be saved! Leon, I need you to find a vampire virus vaccine in the North Area? I’ll go find another antiviral agent in the East Area. If you find it, please go to the security room in the South Area and give it to Sherry!”

“Don’t worry, I’ll find it.” Leon assured her, “Good luck, Claire.”

“You too.” Claire sighed a breath of relief before turning off the radio.

A vampire virus vaccine...Could such thing even exist? If there were actually one, it must be in the development section, which was unavailable for now. Anyway, all he could do now was to investigate the dormitory section.

As soon as Leon opened the door of the dormitory, the smell of **** overwhelmed him. The ground of this long corridor ahead of him was covered in blood, some of which were even fresh.

There were dozens of entry logs in the auto log terminal beside the door from 27th to the dusk of 29th, some of them were from general staffs, yet no exit logs. It seemed that all of those who got here had regarded this place as a safe shelter, but he knew very well that this was just another **** trap.

The latest log was nearly an hour ago from an unregistered visitor. Who could that be?

Leon followed the trail of blood into one of the rooms and found the highly decayed corpse of a man in a tactical suit, with the label of “J. Martinez” on his chest, sitting by the wall. Based on the bullet wound on his skull and the pistol in his hand, Leon would say that this man had committed suicide.

He picked up the recorder beside the body and tried to find out what happened by playing the tape. The time stamp on the entry was 22nd of September. The recording had no sound, probably because the recorder was damaged.

Martinez was hiding in the vent on the ceiling, spying on a blonde scientist who was nervously collecting something from the lab. After receiving signals from his teammates, Martinez jumped from the ceiling and pointed his MP5 machine gun at the scientist.

“Wait...it’s him!” Leon recognized the scientist’s face. It was the G-creature he encountered in the police station and the sewer system.

The confrontation soon turned into hell as the scientist tried to grab a gun and was shot repeatedly by Martinez. One of Martinez’s teammate acquired the suitcase from the dead scientist and they left the room.

However, before they could reach the cable car, they were attacked by the mutated scientist and most of the team were killed. During the fight, the suitcase was destroyed and some of the test tubes inside were broken. Martinez was severely injured and he escaped into the dorm. He finished the recording seconds later.

Leon breathed deeply and searched for the other entries. The last recording started on 23rd.

Martinez was firing his machine gun at some unseen things in the corridor before he ran back inside this room and closed the door behind him. He was sitting by the wall and breathing heavily. The door was busted by the unseen things. He pointed the pistol at the door without firing, and shortly after he killed himself with it.

The recorder rolled to the side and Martinez’s body was being ravaged by the unseen monsters, leaving pairs of puncture wounds on his corpse. The recording ended a few minutes later.

“Jesus...” Leon couldn’t help but gasp in horror.

The virus must’ve been spread from this place. Leon couldn’t imagine what terrible things had happened here, but he must keep searching for the general staff clearance.

However, the deeper he went, the worse the situation was. On the B1 floor of the dorm, most of the doors were closed and he could hear seductive moans and low growls behind them.

This place has become an orgy of vampire sex...He tried his best to stay quiet in the corridor, but the aroma of sweet juice in the air was making him more and more difficult to maintain his senses. His legs started to shake and the erection of his dick was both annoying and arousing him. He really wanted to just rush into a random room and join them.

Luckily, the air was too thick for the sex-drowning vampires to smell a living person, so Leon safely made his way to the washroom. He checked every stall cautiously and found a corpse in the last one.

Well, a “corpse” was not accurate to describe this naked woman as he found bite marks on her neck and breasts. Judging from the blood from her wounds, she must’ve been bitten not long ago, although it was only a matter of time before she woke up with fangs and craved for blood.

However, the ID wristband on her arm shone a blue light, indicating that it had a general staff clearance chip installed.

Leon really wanted to just shoot her head and prevented her from turning, but the firing sound would make all the vampires in the dorms hear him. He couldn’t deal with all of them, so he must be discreet.

He carefully rubbed the plated silver on a bullet off with his combat knife, then struck her chest with it, just moments before she opened her red eyes and grabbed his hand with her claws.

He was gravely frightened, but luckily her fate has been sealed. She quivered in horror before slowing burning from inside, as the silver dust went into her heart and, through it, her whole system.

That was too close...He took a long breath. He grabbed the wristband in the pile of dust on the floor and removed the clearance chip from it. With the clearance he could go to the development section and find the vaccine Sherry needed. But first...

To ease the tension he walked towards the wash basin and poured the cold water to his face.

He smirked to himself in the mirror. It’s funny. He never felt this scared tonight. When the female vampire opened her eyes and attacked him, he was thinking about Ada. Her deep eyes, her smiles, even her dangerous yet charming fangs were flashing before his eyes.

He was afraid that he could never make it back to her. He was afraid, yet also more brave and reckless, because he got more to lose now.

He poured another handful of water to his face to calm down. Between the sounds of water drops, he captured some little noises from behind.

By instinct he looked up into the mirror and saw nothing behind him. Well, maybe he was just too nervous.
