Crown of Desire
Power, Lust, and Desire
Chapter One: The Price of Power
Kolinda Lana Vranješ wasn’t a woman accustomed to disappointment. But as she stared at her half-finished drink, her date a no-show, her patience thinned with each passing minute. The dimly lit bar buzzed with the chatter of others, laughter and the clink of glasses filling the air, but none of it reached her.
She’d worn the dress for him—an off-the-shoulder black number that clung to her curves just enough to suggest what lay beneath without revealing it. Her makeup was subtle but precise, her hair flowing like a midnight waterfall over her shoulders. She was stunning, as always, and yet tonight, that same beauty seemed to be nothing more than a cruel joke.
Her phone buzzed once, twice, then three times in quick succession. No apologies, no explanations, just the cold void of being forgotten.
She sighed, lifting her glass and downing the remaining whiskey. Her fingers drummed idly on the edge of the bar as her eyes scanned the room. It was then that she noticed him—a man in his mid-forties, tall and broad, his gray hair slightly tousled as though he had been through something—something that, just like her, left him feeling untethered. His gaze locked on hers, steady and unflinching, and a shiver ran through her.
He didn’t look away.
In fact, he seemed to be studying her in a way that made her feel... seen. Not just her body, but her. Kolinda Lana Vranješ. The woman who ruled a country from the shadows, whose name carried weight, but not the kind most people would recognize. She was an enigma, a tempest wrapped in silk.
Her lips curled into a smile, but it was one of mischief rather than warmth. Kolinda didn’t get stood up, not by anyone. And this man, with his sharp eyes and brazen confidence, was about to learn that.
She slid off the barstool and approached him, her heels clicking like a warning.
“You’ve been staring at me for far too long,” she said, her voice steady, her tone one of mock reprimand.
He raised an eyebrow, a slow smile curling on his lips. "I wasn't staring, love. Just appreciating."
Kolinda leaned in just enough so that her breath grazed his ear. “Don’t lie. It’s rude.”
He chuckled softly, eyes never leaving hers. “I wasn’t lying. I don’t do rude.”
She stood upright again, her gaze steady, daring him to continue. “And yet here I am, alone and waiting for someone who decided I wasn’t worth their time.”
His hand slid casually down his drink, fingers brushing the glass as he watched her, a playful gleam in his eyes. "Maybe," he said slowly, "you’re worth more than just a drink and a conversation."
Kolinda’s lips parted as a surge of heat flared in her chest. His words were more than flirtation; they were a challenge. A promise.
She couldn’t ignore it. She never could.
“I’m not looking for a conversation,” she replied softly, leaning in closer. “Not tonight.”
His grin widened. "Then maybe you're in the wrong place, darling."
She tilted her head, eyes narrowing. “And where would you suggest I go?”
He leaned back against his seat, his fingers lightly brushing the curve of her hip. “Wherever the night takes us. But I guarantee, it won’t be where you’ve planned.”
Kolinda’s pulse quickened as his fingers lingered, tracing the edge of her body, a touch so light it could have been imagined, yet so undeniably real. He wasn’t just flirting—he was pulling her in. Slowly, deliberately. With no intention of letting go.
She let the silence hang between them for a moment, her lips tingling with anticipation. Then, without another word, she grabbed his hand, tugging him off the stool. His eyes flickered with surprise, then something darker. Something predatory.
They left the bar together, the weight of their unspoken agreement lingering in the air.
Later, in the quiet of his apartment
The door slammed behind them as they stumbled inside. The world outside ceased to matter, their bodies taking over with the urgency of two people who knew exactly what they wanted, and neither was going to stop until they got it.
Clothes fell to the floor. Hands gripped. Lips collided with a force that matched the burning intensity between them. There were no words, no apologies. Just need. Just hunger.
And when they finally collapsed together, bodies entwined, breath mingling in a rhythm that was both primal and tender, Kolinda felt something she hadn’t in a long time—control. The kind that came not from holding power over people, but from surrendering to the moment.
As the hours passed, the room became a blur of warmth, friction, and soft, unrelenting pleasure. She was both the predator and the prey, and for once, it didn’t matter.
The Morning After
Kolinda woke with a groan, the early morning light creeping through the blinds. Her body was sore, but it was a good kind of soreness. A reminder of the night’s indulgence. As she reached for her phone, her heart skipped. Three missed calls.
Her mother.
She slid the phone back onto the nightstand and closed her eyes again, unsure if she was ready to face the world just yet. Maybe she’d ignore it. Maybe she’d just fall back into the sheets and forget about everything for a while longer.
But a thought lingered—What does it all mean now?
Kolinda, Lana Vranješ, the woman who had everything and nothing, drifted back to sleep with the quiet hum of confusion still buzzing in her mind.
