Chapter 1 - The Bite
Scarlet crouched low on the slanted rooftop, red hair spilling over one shoulder as she balanced, silent as breath, above the slow-waking pulse of Ravenridge. The town below was nothing like the neon grime of Seattle—Ravenridge was brick and wood and autumn mist, all sharp-edged eaves and cracked sidewalks, the old world and the new stitched together with a tired sort of pride. She could smell wet leaves and cold stone, the faintest copper tang of something she didn’t want to think about. The sunrise barely touched the hollow between hills, leaving the streets shrouded in that blue-gray haze that felt so damn familiar.
She’d come a long way to get this far. Far enough that, if she kept to the shadows and never lingered, maybe she’d be safe a little longer. Maybe no one would care to hunt her, not this deep in Pennsylvania’s bones. Her kind—well, let’s just say they don’t appreciate quitters.
But she was done running for the sake of it. Now she needed something else. Protection. A shield she could slip behind. Someone with the right kind of potential.
She watched him: Max Walker. He was easy to pick out among the trickle of students on the cracked sidewalk. Average in every visible way, almost studiously so—medium height, a mop of unruly black hair that never sat right, and a habit of hunching his shoulders like he was trying to make himself invisible. Today he wore a faded blue hoodie with the sleeves pushed up, exposing wiry forearms, and a battered pair of jeans that looked a size too big, the knees scuffed white. His sneakers were the kind you bought at Walmart and wore until they fell apart. A dull gray backpack was slung low, heavy with books, and he walked with the cautious stride of someone used to going unnoticed.
Scarlet had been watching him for weeks now—always the same routine. Out the door of the large white boarding house at 7:45 sharp, earbuds jammed in, eyes fixed on the sidewalk, face closed and unreadable. He never glanced up at the town, never noticed the girl with the fiery hair watching from the roof, not even once. He took the same route through the heart of Ravenridge, past the diner with the flickering neon, past the squat red-brick post office, always alone. And every night, she’d see him returning just after dusk, never early, never late.
He was a ghost in plain sight—so ordinary that it made her blood prickle. But she’d watched him enough to know there was something off beneath the surface, a tension he tried to drown in routine. Something restless. She could sense it in the little things: the way his jaw would clench when he thought no one was looking, the restless tapping of his fingers on the straps of his bag, the split-second glances over his shoulder even when the street was empty. She’d seen the way he scanned shadows, as if expecting the world to bite.
He was nobody. Yet for some reason, she couldn’t look away. Maybe it was hope. Maybe it was desperation. Maybe it was the simple, selfish wish to be the one who changed everything.
Scarlet pressed her tongue to the back of her teeth, felt that old, coiled ache stir low in her gut. If she was right about him—if he really could be what she needed—then everything might finally shift. She needed someone strong, someone she could shape, someone who wouldn’t run when things got dangerous. But more than that, she needed to believe she wasn’t just running anymore. She was choosing.
The first bell at Blackstone College rang out in the distance, tinny and insistent. Max didn’t even flinch, just kept walking, hood up against the world.
Scarlet’s lips curved in a grim, private smile. Tonight. Maybe tonight was the night she’d stop watching and finally act.
She faded back into the shadow, heart beating a little too fast, mind already racing with plans and hunger and the edge of hope.
