Impossible is possible

The room goes quiet, as everyone stares at Samus. Slowly, you shake your head.

“That’s crazy, for several reasons. First, we barely got out of there when we rescued Kaeli.”

Kaeli nods. “We were lucky. I doubt we could pull it off again.”

You sigh. “Second, I thought that you chained the Great One because he’s hopelessly corrupted. If we free him, what’s to stop him from becoming just as big of a problem as Niran. Or more, since he’s more powerful than Niran could ever be!”

Samus nods. “Very good points. To answer the first, you will succeed because this time I will be coming with you.”

Ferra leans forward. “I thought that you did not want to be detected.”

You shake your head. “It’s the Great One doing the detection. If we’re there to release him, then there’s no worry about that. But my second point remains.”

Melora nods. “We would be doing the world a great disservice by releasing a corrupted god. I don’t need my power to see that it’s a terrible idea.”

Samus sighs, and you see sadness in his eyes. “We would be freeing him from the palace, not from the shackles I put on him. I want to try to cure him.”

Nadia stares at the demigod incredulously. “We don’t have anything like that kind of power, Samus. Even curing Kaeli was a strain. We could probably cure Victoria, but the Great One? It would kill us to try.”

I could feel the strain myself. I can’t imagine what it would take to cure him.

You nod. “I’m not willing to sacrifice ourselves for the slim chance it would be enough. I understand you want to save him, but you’re asking for the impossible.”

Samus shakes his head. “It’s not impossible with my help. I can promise you will survive. I will be the final link, a buffer of protection. But we need him. He knows more about the corruption than anyone. Or he did. He’s very far gone now. Even when he reaches out for my mind anymore, it’s no longer him. We need him back.”

You sigh, but Kaeli speaks first. “It’s true. Most of our knowledge of the corruption comes from the Great One. And he may be the only one able to stop Niran’s plans.”

Sarah nods. “And if the capital is in a civil war right now, then this is our only chance.”

Alex bounces excitedly in her seat. “Ooh, I could try out my new powers!”

You laugh. “I can feel the tide turning, here. And if it works, it’s certainly a game changer.”

Melora raises an eyebrow at you. “That’s one way to put it. If this works, we could win the war outright.”

You shrug. “That’s a load bearing ‘if’, though. There’s a lot of ways this could go wrong. And we just proved we’re not invincible.”

Alex makes a face. “Says you. Apparently I get stabbed and then turn into a sexy star goddess!”

Cassie giggles. “I don’t think that’s the best way to power up!”

You roll your eyes. “So, I guess this is as good a plan as any we have. Any objections?”

Nadia speaks up. “Not an objection, just…I don’t want to be left behind again.”

Melora nods. “We all go. None of us are helpless.”

You sigh. “I don’t want any of you hurt…”

Ferra takes your hand. “We willingly take that risk, master. Trust us, as we trust you.”

With another sigh, you nod. “You know I can’t refuse you. Fine. But please be careful.”

Kaeli smiles at you. “From what I understand, you’re the risk taker here, Nicholas.”

The other girls giggle, and you roll your eyes. “Yes, I have some terrible ideas. Speaking of which, it sounds like we’re on board, Samus.”

The demigod nods. “I will need time to prepare. A week. I shall return then.”

With that, he simply walks away. You chuckle and shake your head.
