A good question. Cancel? Confront? Ignore?

Ignore, for now.

Chapter 263 by Spars2023

“I’ll talk to him in our session, don’t confront him yourself, or cancel movie night. Let him think he tricked you and I’ll handle it. With you, he may get into games, rather than addressing the issue. Get me the list of other people in his group.”

“Of course. Thanks for handling this.”

“It’s my job.”

“Yep. How are things going otherwise? Did you have a good weekend? Any luck with that boyfriend of yours?”

“That’s really…” she clearly wanted to say none of my business, but hardly could after asking me and asking my opinion on her clothes. “Not something we can discuss here.”

“No problem, doc, if you need anything, just give me a call, or text me, after all, you’ve got my number.” Somehow.

“Will do,” she said.

I glanced around, we were along for the moment, “Seriously, doc, promise me you’ll call or text if you need help with anything.”

She nodded. +4 SP (Penelope: +64) Which was more than I expected as she’d reached out to me to do exactly that.

I headed back up, just in time for Harley to arrive. She bounced in eagerly, “Hey Mistah C! Movie night was fun as hell! Not by standard measurements, but compared to every other time I’ve been in here. Totally makes killing that freak Zsasz and getting solitary worth it!”

The other guards in the room didn’t look surprised, but did look...interested. I gave them and her a totally flat look. “I’m glad you enjoyed it, Ms. Quinzell, but I don’t think talking about how you’re glad you chose to kill someone is going to help with your rehabilitation, though I am not a doctor. Unlike you.”

She laughed, and bounced over to me, lowering her voice so the guards couldn’t hear, “Oh, Mistah C, we both know that and why I killed that psycho.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed movie night,” I said loud enough they could hear it.

“Indeed and my next one’s in only a month or two!” the exact number of movie nights would depend on the number of inmates who were allowed access to the library, which she clearly didn’t quite know. It wasn’t that high.

“We’ll see.”

“WHAT?!?” that prompted nervous looks from the other visitors and the guards actually reached for their stun batons, not that it was likely to help if it came to combat.

“Well, Ms. Quinzell, I haven’t been here for that long, but you’ve been in solitary twice.” She paused, calming down a bit and I continued, “Also, we’ll be doing a new drawing every time we cycle through, so it could be longer than that, depending on when you’re drawn.”

She leaned forward giving me what would have been a look down her top in her usual costume, but for whatever reason, she’d forgotten to unzip her Arkham jumpsuit, which wasn’t even particularly tight, so this was a singularly unimpressive sight. “Come on, how does that make sense? No one’s complaining about the order,”

I gave her a flat look, “That you’ve heard. But they wouldn’t complain to you would they?”

“But, but, this doesn’t make any sense, why would we change the order every time, it means some folks’ll get two in a row and others will be separated by months!”

“That’s a problem, but since we actually do have turnover and since some folks are already trying to figure out who’s in their group so they can get the movies they want by threatening other patients, so we’ll change the groups every time through.”

“I didn’t!” she denied, in a not particularly believable way.

“I didn’t say you did. Go find a book, Ms. Quinzell.”

Well, that didn’t fucking work, just to be defiant, she stuck around for the next hour, being a pain in the ass and keeping me from getting much done. I did manage to get +1 SP (Harley: +27) by having her pass me a few books as I was re-shelving, but that was an aggravating goddamn hour of my life, though it just made me look forward to finally getting her under control.

When she left, I headed down to see Penelope again and told her about the conversation and Harley’s attempts to ‘falsely’ imply that I had put her up to killing Zsasz and her strange pushiness about the schedule.

“Well, she can hardly get earlier than she did this time around, she’s probably upset about the risk of not getting another chance until later. This is one reason I was concerned about this, additional benefits means additional complications.”

“I’ve got it under control, just wanted to give you a heads up in case it comes up.”

“I appreciate that.”

“And come on, doc, this has been a lot of work, tell me it’s not for nothing and there’s some benefits to all this work?”

“Of course it has, that’s why I supported the idea. I’m seeing more compliance with their medications and a decline in issues. No one wants to lose out on their new privileges. They’ll adapt, of course, get used to it, just like they did to the library and it’ll become less useful, but we can step things up then. Offer the chance to add movies to the collection, or something similar. But that’s for the future, for now, thanks for telling me.”

Dammit, no SP from that either. I gave up and headed back.

Riddler got to visit the library, as well as have movie night. And oh boy was he smug about the upcoming movie. And his riddle. “Did you comprehend all of the votes for tonight?” he asked in his pretentious, faux-upper-crust voice.

That...was an interesting question. Not the actual truth, I obviously had, but should I admit that? His whole thing was being superior and his widely known obsession with Batman was based around the other man’s solving of his riddles. But he famously killed the stupid, for being stupid.

Fuck, I really should have gotten Penelope’s advice on this…
