Chapter 6

How do you get out of this one?
If she didn't like shopping...
Perhaps you could've written something smart - like Petite women love trying on clothes for their boyfriends - but due to past traumas, that's not what winds up on teh paper.
Old Rule: Petite women dislike shopping for clothes.
And the second you dot the period and lift your pencil, you realize you've made a terrible mistake.
The entire world shimmers around you. Christina isn't spared.
Christina's beautiful dark hair winds back into a ponytail, losing some of its luster in the process. Round glasses slide onto her face. Even Christina's skin loses some of its smoothness. A couple minor blemishes suddenly mark her cheeks, though you only really notice because your girlfriend takes such great care of her skin.
Meanwhile, her stylish frilly pink top thickens into baggy orange sweater, and her formerly dark, tight jeans loosen and sag till they're baggy and well-worn. Christina's trendy flats, similarly, are replaced with the pair of beat-up tennis shoes she usually reserves for moving boxes and painting bathrooms.
Wait - oh fuck, you even recognize the outfit. Christina shared her high school yearbook with you once. These are clothes she owned back in high school.
"Oh my god." You gawk.
Your suddenly frumpy girlfriend (though you'd definitely still bang her) rocks back at your strong reaction. "Is there something on my face?" asks Christina, jerkily lifting a hand to her cheek.
"Uh, no, nothing like that," you hurry.
She looks shaken. "S-so you don't want to go to the mall...?" She practically trips over her words, displaying a lack of confidence you've never seen in your girlfriend before just now.
You've always known Christina was a fashionista. Managing a clothing boutique is one of her career milestones for crying out loud. But if she never liked shopping for clothes, it must've changed other things about her too. Important things. Her past. Her personality.
Christina's totally different now to who she was before. Gone is her confidence, her effortless looks, her poise. She's so different now you don't even know where to start.
Well, that's not true. There is one place you could start.
"Why do you still want to go to the mall?" you ask, still shocked by your girlfriend's sudden transformation. "Don't you hate shopping?" It feels wrong to even suggest such a thing, but the Rulebook can't lie.
Christina regains her original assertiveness at the question. "No, that's the great part - there's a used bookstore that just opened up there that I was reading about on social media, it has amazing reviews. I thought we could maybe check it out together...? I know it's an hour away but we'd be together so it'd be a fun drive."
Maybe this wasn't such a terrible mistake after all. Fashionista Christina into Bookish Christina? She's still the same beautiful little latino lady she's always been. Why not give this a shot?
Do you give Nerd Christina a shot?
