Continue with the Pair? Or something Else?
How's Sam doing?
Samantha was lying on the couch of the living room area, typing away at her laptop resting on her stomach with one hand, the other hand hanging off the edge and petting Bella the cat. She was a needy cat but a real sweet when you got to it. While Clover had been moping and Alex was training with Kendra, she'd been working on trying to solve this whole marriage problem. Cupid had been nice about giving them all sorts of info onto their devices but the info was very... disappointing or just obtuse.
First off, the contract and Cupid's Wish in general seemed to be layered by proxies, contracts, firewalls, blood pacts, and godly intervention. Even more safeguards existed, probably, but Sam had just given up at that point. There didn't seem to be a way to break the contract, outside of a very very narrow and riddle-based set of directions.
"-Love is kind, love you sweet. Yet love does not last forever, to break your bond and free your souls. You must seek out nine, nine gods of the heart.
-With the permission of these nine, you will have the strength necessary to break the bonds that bind. Yet these nine alone or not enough to unbind that which is bound.
-For the string that binds you, is the string that must be cut, not pulled. Thus, you must forge something freshly born, something ancient old. Within the white and the might of a Star, forge the twins of progress and tradition together into a Blade.
-Yet to use this Blade, you must first find a Toon. Whose heart is true and whose being defies all that is true. A being of chaos and whimsy, for it is with their aid, may the blade pierce the fabric that binds.
-With this Blade, the aid of a Toon, and the blessing of the nine. Your fates will be forever yours to decide."
Before, Sam would have grumbled and been doubtful at half of what it asked for. But here she was, in a different world, to be married to a woman from yet another one. So strange and weird was the order of the day it seemed. White and Might of a Star, that was easy but also maddening; it would have to be a White Dwarf. Now how'd they harness that is another issue. Nine Gods of heart..., Sam figured any gods or deities based around Love could work. If the multiverse existed, Gods probably did to.
"Best to not think too much on the implications of that though..." Sam muttered as she clicked away at her keyboard. The Blade was a bit harder to get but Sam felt confident that they needed something made of Science for one half of the Blade. If she was correct though, most fictional settings(Well guess they weren't all fictional) tended to have Science and Magic against each other, and Magic usually was FAR older. Twins of Progress and Tradition..., Science and Magic. That made a level of sense.
For the Toon bit..., she was unsure. Kendra might have a better idea but Sam was just a tad confused by that line. It did seem that they would need some sort of Toon based being that defied the laws of physics but that was most cartoon characters. Would probably need something better than pulling up to Micky Mouse and asking for a hand though. So they needed the help of 9 gods, forge a blade from Science and Magic in the heart of a White Dwarf, and then get stupidly powered Cartoon character to use it.
"Ugh..." Sam pinched the bridge of her nose, "Can never be easy huh? Might just be worth getting back home and just ignoring Kendra." No... she couldn't really do that. Not without Clover and Alex's input at least and Alex probably wouldn't want to just take Kendra away from her family. Besides they were supposed to be the good guys; they shouldn't just basically kidnap someone like that. Sure, Whoop would make sure she was taken care off but..., she'd still be by and large stranded in their world.
“Still one for the many…, have to at least ask later.” Sam thought. That said, with everything else Cupid’s Wish has set up, just ignoring the marriage probably wouldn’t work. With their reach, they could very well just end up forcing it.
Moving away from that thought, she was able to scrounge up was how this estate would work... for the most part. Regardless of world they would find themselves on, all their documents would update and change to reflect their location. Money too would also transfer over so currently they'd be fine. Sam had also found the legal paper work for the marriage and well...., they needed a new steak knife. The house was fully set up to accommodate all 4 of them, but that was it. Bills would need to be paid, groceries need to be picked up, hospital visits, etc. etc. The Spy Facility however had its own power source, a mix of geo thermal and…. well, she wasn’t SURE what it was. Probably magic of some kind, or some other strange-real tech (Strange Real being the term she was going with for any magi-tech). With that, and it’s own water filtration, the underground base was self-sufficient.
“Not enough power to run both at the same time, even with that magic generator.” Sam noted as she pulled up power demands of the house, “So it’s house or base…, given that we’re not using the base just yet, it can probably go off the grid then…,” she’d talk with the girls tomorrow about it. The red head wasn’t sure about having their house powered by that weird tech.
The other main draw was the house seemed to have the ability to warp from world to world. While there was a main terminal in the offices and living room, Sam had the program warmed up on the side of her computer screen. Currently it was in 'cool down' with a timer counting down. The house was only able to warp about every two weeks according to the instruction document. It didn't list limit of its power though, so for all Sam knew they could go anywhere. All the math involved made her head hurt but it also featured a 'scanner' system, so possibly all it took was just a photo of where they wanted to go.
"Wonder if I can just scan a Spider-man Comic and warp there." Sam puzzler to herself, “Hmm, what’s the difference between that and something Kendra drew?”
“Kendra…”, Sam muttered to herself, playing around with the name, “Kendra Grey. Samantha Grey…, no that’s silly.” The spy thought, waving that thought away. Though she was still a bit of an enigma.
From her records she seemed to be just a normal cartoonist. Like Jon Arbuckle; she even had the cats to go with it. Did every cartoonist adopt pets? But she was in a good enough position in her life, Kendra really didn’t need to go on date sites. Yes her sister got married but…, was that it?
With a few taps, Sam pulled back up Kendra’s contact. It was pretty sparse and bland though Kendra said her computer died shortly after putting the data in. Maybe part of her info wasn’t sent? But still it just seemed to be rather simple.
Kendra wanted someone to bond with and find love, someone that could bring her excitement and color to her life. Along with someone would could share her passion with art with or just be passionate about life and not work. All and all, Kendra’s contract was simple, though she put herself as Bi.
“Just doesn’t make sense. Why match us up with her? Why match me up?” Sam thought as she chewed On a fingernail in thought.
There had to be something more. It wasn’t like Kendra had to be some super villain or evil **** but; it just didn’t make sense to her or why this match up. Honestly with such a profile, Kendra seemed like she could maybe be matched with anyone in the multiverse.
Even comparing her own contact and her mother’s to Kendra’s made it just obvious that she filled in only the broadest strokes of said contract. Was that really all it was, just random choice based off an algorithm? Kendra being so vanilla she fit into all three of theirs? Technically all six, given each of their mothers had also made one….
Sam sat up, causing the cat to let out an offended ‘meow’ from the loss of petting. Their mothers has made a contract on their own. One they had no clue about the existence of.
“Did.., did someone apply a contract for Kendra?” Sam asked as she moved the laptop into her lap, starting her search for folders. She’d not even considered it that morning when she was looking at the trio’s info, but was there something hidden about Kendra’s own info? Something she didn’t even know existed herself?
Sam was so busy tapping away at her machines keyboard, she barely processed the blur of red and gold moving though the living room. When her mind finally did realize it, Sam looked up and turned towards the garage hallway. “Was that…” Sam openly started to question before she was cut off by an engine.
“Clover!!! You!!” Sam cried as she ran after her friend, only to be greeted by a trail of smoke and the closing garage door. Cough and waving a hand to dispel the smoke, Sam took stock.
Clover had taken a bike rather than one of the cars so she more than likely would be back. Even the Blonde’s most insane packing tricks wouldn’t let her pack enough food and clothes for a long trip, and those were high end speed bikes not long-distance cycles.
“So she can’t be going to far. Still, better call..” Sam muttered, digging out her compact. Sam pulled out a small compact make up mirror only to press it just right to turn it into what would be the equivalent of an ipod or other small mobile machine. With a grumble, Sam started to ring up Clover.
Only to fume when all she got back was a text message that simply said ‘I need time alone, I’ll be back in the morning – Clover.’. Even had a smiley face to it. That was so Clover. Taking off rather than facing a problem.
“Better go warn Alex.” Sam said in a huff. Clover would be back soon enough anyway. It was starting to get dark, and she wasn’t stupid enough to go running around in a place she had no knowledge of. At worst she’d probably find a bar and drag home some guy, again. Still Alex had to hear about this.
To her surprise, it didn’t seem like Alex would. At least not now. Sam headed down to the gym and found the place empty and a bit messy. The two gym users weren’t in s hurry to clean up it appeared. There was a note on the first piece of equipment near the door though.
“Sam, Clover; Kendra started to feel tired and had to be carried to her room. I tucked her in. She’s not used to working out and went overboard. And neither am I after a few months of not doing it. I think I’ll have turned in by the time you read this. Don’t strangle each other tonight~ - Alex”
Sam stood alone in the gym processing the fact she had been left alone, basically holding the bag. It made sense, she just wished she was told first. But she’d been so busy in her own work she neglected the time. Her stomach growled a bit to confirm this. And a chorus of meows answered. The redhead looked down and saw all three cats trying to get attention for food.
“Well; there’s bound to be something easy I can make up for myself, and I saw were your owner got your food out from.” Sam sighed, pocketing the note and turning to leave. “Let’s get you something.”
The cats gave what Sam assumed to be a cheerful meow and followed her. She’d feel more at ease after getting some food anyway. Or at least getting away from the gym, that place smelled… funky.
On a whim, Sam pulled up the Location app on her spy device. Alex was in her room; Kendra was off in the master bedroom. Made sense to her as the only other room the woman could maybe claim was the art room. Still it didn’t hurt to check to make sure they were sleeping. Last thing she needed was for them to go missing. Sam put her compact away, failing to notice the two dots flicked and appeared on top of each other.
Stay with Sam?
Check in with Clover?
Peak in on Kendra and Alex?
Who do we go to next?
