Elise Tennyson

Elise was smiling excitedly as she got out of her car, admiring the lovely building across the way—the Lily Garden Bed & Breakfast, where she would be staying for the next three months. She had been positively delighted when the department chair surprised her with this vacation at her party two weeks ago, celebrating the start of her tenth year teaching literature at the University of Kansas City. Although she called it a vacation, it was actually meant to be a trial run for a continuing education course held by HH Lifelong Learning, a company that branded itself as being indispensable for keeping any team of educators up to date with the latest teaching methods. Since her coworkers needed to send someone to test the program and ensure it met the university’s standards, and they knew she’d feel guilty if she abandoned her students to take a normal vacation, this proved to be the perfect excuse to get Elise to take a well-deserved break. After all, while this was technically work, it would certainly be far less busy than Elise’s normal schedule.

Stretching to ease the stiffness from the long car ride, Elise took a moment to breathe in the fresh country air. As much as I’d rather not admit it, I definitely needed this vacation. I can’t even remember the last time I took off work that wasn’t because Claire or I were sick. The thought of her daughter reminded her that she had yet to text that she had reached her destination.

Oh well, reception must be a bit spotty. Maybe I’ll have better luck once I’m on the Wi-Fi. Elise put her phone back in her purse for the time being and brushed some stray pieces of lint from her khakis as she walked across the street to the entrance.

“That girl,” she muttered to herself, “I know I should be happy that we get along so well, but she needs to try spreading her wings at least a little bit. Her first two months at college, and she hasn’t gone out with friends a single time, so far. It’s like she spends all her free time with me.” Elise was of two minds regarding her daughter: on the one hand, she was happy that Claire was making better choices than she had at that age. After all, college is hard enough even without spending most of your freshman year pregnant, as Elise had. While Elise has never regretted going through with the pregnancy, and loves her daughter very dearly, it was undeniable that her early adulthood was significantly more difficult after she let her loser boyfriend knock her up the night of prom during her senior year of high school.

On the other hand, Elise was worried that Claire might be going too far in the other direction. While it’s good to be responsible, Elise also recognizes that college should be an important period of exploration and self-discovery, and it’s rather difficult to go out and find yourself when you spend all your nights and weekends hanging out at home with your mom.

Strolling into a deserted lobby, Elise occupied herself examining some of the artwork hanging on the walls as she waited. A rather odd assortment, She mused to herself. I’m assuming most of these must be recreations of some renaissance works. Though… I certainly wasn’t expecting quite this many nude paintings. Or any nude paintings, for that matter. Having spent an appropriate amount of time waiting for assistance, Elise was ready to ring the bell at the counter when she heard a commotion coming from the open doors leading to the garden. Cautiously making her way along the cobblestone path toward a large pavilion, she could hear faint conversation before the shouting resumed.

Not wanting to interrupt what was clearly a very colorful tirade, Elise patiently stood next to one of the pillars at the pavilion’s entrance so as to not draw attention to herself. The furious redhead continued to shout until an elegant woman in white waved her hand, somehow muting the stream of curses. I don’t know what she did, but I have got to get her to teach me that trick, Elise unknowingly thought in unison with the others present, remembering some unruly students that she would have loved to silence like the redhead. She shook that unsavory thought from her head as she scanned the remaining people seated in the pavilion, her eyes coming to rest on a familiar face. Wait, is that Adam? I haven’t seen him in years. I never expected I’d run into a former student of mine here. Elise was roused from her thoughts when she realized the elegant woman was now speaking.

“—It’s already past time for our next guest to arrive.” The woman spoke in an exasperated tone, and Elise, assuming herself to be the aforementioned guest, took the opportunity to step further into the entryway.

“Yes—um, I’ve actually been standing here for the past minute, or so—I just wasn’t sure when it would be appropriate for me to interrupt…” Every head turned to look at her, except for the redhead, who was still silently screaming. “At least—I assume you were referring to me, given the fact that I haven’t seen anyone else here. Um… nice to meet all of you, I suppose. Though I guess it would be more fitting to say, ‘nice to see you again,’ in Adam’s case.”

“Great to see you, too, Professor Tennyson. How is Claire doing? She should be about ready to enter college, right?” Adam warmly replied, glad for the chance to catch up with one of his favorite professors.

“Oh please, Adam! You haven’t been my student in years. You should feel free to just call me ‘Elise,’ okay? As for Claire, she actually just started at UKC this semester. Go Wombats!” Elise lightly pumped her fist in the air as she smiled somewhat awkwardly, still uncomfortable with the tension left over from the previous woman’s rage. She nervously tucked a strand of dirty blonde hair behind her ear as her brown eyes looked expectantly toward the woman who seemed to be in charge, waiting for some cue as to how she should proceed. Taking pity at her obvious unease, Sera stood. walked over, and offered a hand to her.

“Thank you for your consideration, Miss Elise. My name is Sera, and I’m the manager here. I’m truly sorry that such an outburst tainted your first impression. Please, feel free to sit down and introduce yourself to everyone with whom you’ve yet to be acquainted.” Sera gestured to a new chair, with it becoming more apparent that the seating was gradually forming a circle. Meanwhile, as Elise was turned away from them speaking with Sera, Erica was leaning over to whisper in Adam’s ear.

“You’re one lucky bastard. You know that, Adam? None of the professors I had back in community college were younger than 60, while you were up here taking MILF 101. Damn, I’m jealous.”

"Really? Y'know she actually has a bit of a reputation as a freshman killer."

"Yikes. Is she that tough?"

“Hardly. Or, at least, I don’t think so. They probably just aren’t prepared for her to have actual expectations. They assume it’ll be a blow-off class, but Professor Tennyson really doesn’t like slackers. Though I will admit that her grading standards are slightly higher than average. That said—if how you were in college is anything like how you were in 4th grade, she would have eaten you for breakfast.” Adam and Erica both returned to sitting normally, while Erica smiled and thought to herself: Don’t threaten me with a good time.

As Elise sat down and the whispers ceased, Sera turned to Elise to ask her standard set of questions.

“So, Miss Elise, could you please tell our viewers your name, age, occupation, cup size, and most recent sexual encounter?” Sera asked as if those were perfectly normal topics of conversation.

“I’m sorry, I must have misheard you. Did you say viewers? And what were those last que—I’m Elise Tennyson, 36. I teach literature at the University of Kansas City. I’m a D-cup, and, unless you count the vibrator in my nightstand, my only sexual encounter was 18 years ago, which resulted in my lovely daughter, Claire.” Elise blushed and covered her mouth once she regained control, embarrassed at her disclosure of some highly personal details. “Oh, um… please forget that you all heard that. That goes double for you, Adam. Those aren’t the sort of things that a man should know about a lady he’s not in a relationship with, especially if she’s his teacher.”

“Uh… yeah. No worries Profess—um, I mean Elise,” Adam assured her while nervously fidgeting with his fingers. “There’s been a lot of… unexpected forwardness tonight. From most of the people here, really.” Elise felt relieved by his response, but there was something in his expression that she couldn’t quite read. Discomfort, perhaps?

“Good, I suppose that will just have to do, for now. As for you, Ms. Sera, those questions were highly inappropriate! I thought this was supposed to be a professional environment. I was truly looking forward to my stay, but if this is the type of decorum shown by the staff here, I don’t think the University is going to be keen on making use of your services.” Elise had fully entered lecture mode, and was ready to thoroughly critique every objectionable aspect of Sera’s establishment, when Sera gently interrupted with a gesture for her to pause.

“Please do not worry, Miss Elise. I completely understand your trepidation, and I assure you—You will find very few people who value professionalism more than I do. I promise there is an explanation for those particular questions. and I will get to that explanation shortly. For now, however, we’re expecting just a few more guests, and I would prefer to save the explanations until everyone is present. Will that suffice?”

“Very well. I’m quite eager to hear this explanation of yours, so I’ll hold the rest of my questions for the time being.” Elise tried her best to maintain her stern teacher glare, but she found herself somewhat cowed by the serene confidence shown by the target of her lecture.

“Excellent. Now then, our next guest should be waltzing in here any moment now.”

As Elise joined the others in turning their attention toward the entrance, she was unaware of the message being sent from the phone in her purse.
