Chapter 6 by Garf Garf

Head on or hitch a ride?

Hitch a ride

You decide against the **** and go for the van. You don't have much time, so you go all out - meaning that you practically fly through the fire-escape, hit the street level, around the corner of the apartment building and emerge on the street just in time to wave your hands to make the van stop.

You're surprised that the van actually does stop, considering the miserable state of the local neighborhood, and how intimidating you must look. The van driver opens his door and tries to make a run for it - ah, he thinks you are robbing the van, that makes far more sense. Your boosted reactions and fly-by-wire reflexes mean that he doesn't get farther than half-a-dozen steps before you yank the collar of his company jersey.

"Hey, hold up chummer and relax! I ain't bustin' ya ass!"

You put him back down. The guy is pretty young, in his early twenties probably, and stares at you, clearly terrified.

"Jus' lemme in the back and drive as normal as you can up there. You'll make some cash and no-one will know", you tell him, trying to project a calm and friendly demeanor. The guy stares at you for several seconds.

"Uh, how much?"

"How does two hundred sound?"

"Those are some bad dudes, I want three"

"Fine, two-fifty and you don't stick around filming it"

"Okay, it's a deal, get in the back", the driver confirms. He opens the loading door. Fortunately, it's not heavily loaded, and you make yourself comfortable among the foodstuffs. Just in case the driver would double-cross you, you get your guns out and ready.

Six minutes pass before the van stops again, only to reverse for a bit before the engine is turned off. The door opens and you can only see the scared driver, standing on a semi-dark loading bay.

"Quickly! They will come out to get this stuff soon", he urges you. You get up and slide against the wall next to a large roll-up door. After only a brief wait, you hear a bolt being lifted and an electrical motor starts to whiningly lift the door. Four men - three humans and an orc - step outside. One signs the delivery pad of the driver while the other three step inside the truck.

This is too easy and you might as well avoid sending up an alarm. You holster your guns and in two steps reach the first man. Grabbing his neck, you snap it like a twig. He crumples into your arms soundlessly. As the other three are busy grabbing boxes, you wave the driver to go. He gulps and turns away. The second man turns around, holding a box of fruits, which he immediately drops as he spots you and tries to draw a gun. You're quicker. A snap-kick against his chest sends him flying at the third man, both tumbling over. The fourth has time to barely turn when your right fist smashes into his face, breaking his nose, chin, teeth, cheekbones and driving the bone fragments into his brain, killing him instantly. You step inside the truck ready to dispose of the stunned second and fourth guys, but while the second is wheezing on top of a crate like an asthma-patient who just climbed a mountain, the fourth dude - the orc - is a tougher customer, already getting back to his feet. He even manages to partially block your punch and it doesn't take him down. But he's unaugmented and thus too slow to dodge your knee, which drives into his groin. The orc's eyes almost pop out of his head from the pain and you're free to finish this brawl by punching his throat hard. The asthma-patient is fiddling with his commlink but a stomp of your boot in his face puts a stop to that.

Stepping out of the van, you kick the first corpse inside and pull the loading door down. The driver doesn't waste any time, speeding away. You wonder how he will explain the corpses but that's his problem, not yours.

Inside, you've clearly entered a storage space of the brothel. There's a walk-in freezer but more interestingly, a cargo elevator that's big enough for you, so you step inside. According to the buttons, you can go either to the basement or to one of the upper floors. Would Fox be interrogated in one of the "service" rooms above? Or is there a purpose-built dungeon in the basement? The longer you dally, the lower the chances of finding the dark elf alive.

Which way?
