His best friend Chuck

Charles Edward Merryweather, know to all as Chuck, was James' best friend since they were kids. The pair had grown up as neighbours and had been pretty much inseparable since the day they first met at Chuck's sixth birthday party. Even though Chuck had won a sports scholarship to an out of state school the two of them remained close. Seeing his friend's name pop up on his call ID made James smile. He'd forgotten Chuck was home for the weekend. Catching up with his buddy would be just the thing to shake him out of his funk.

"Hey bud" he said already feeling better "What's happening?"

"Oh you know, same old same old" Chuck replied just like he always did "Getting ready slay some pussy tonight. Just checking my wingman is good to go."

"You can count on me." James agreed enthusiastically "Name the time and place and I'll be there."

"Eight tonight my place," Chuck said, "and bring your A game, I'm counting on you, Buddy."

As soon as Chuck finished speaking James felt the world lurch around him. He blinked, confused to find himself standing in the drive of Chuck's parent's house just across the street from his own. His watch said it was exactly eight in the evening but he had no memory of the last few hours since talking to Chuck. Getting his bearings he found he was wearing his favourite shirt and he could smell the expensive cologne he'd been given for Christmas.

"Weird must have zoned out for a while there," he muttered to himself not sure what else could explain the strange timeslip.

Before he could give it any further thought Chuck appeared to distract him with a friendly bearhug. The two of them went into the house to grab a couple of beers while Chuck explained his plan for the evening.
