Help With the High School Prom

The High School's always asking for volunteers. Usually its not enough teachers or substitutes, but this month they've asked for strong arms to help set up for the prom, you included. You pack your pockets with essentials; wallet, keys, phone, and a small tool knife; and drive to the school.

You park in an open spot on the far side of the parking lot, a few other volunteers are arriving at the same time. There's a lady driving a large pickup truck, a young man who's sitting in his car without getting out, another young man leaning on the hood of his coupe, and an older man that parked quickly and went into the school.

You follow the older man into the school, where you turn into the office. The older man is with the receptionist, a young man with long hair. The receptionist looks up at you when you push the awkward sliding door open, "Have a seat," he says, and tilts his head to gesture to a line of chairs on the far side of the office.

You sit for a few minutes before he calls you up. He asks for an ID and full name. He clicks a few times onto a computer in front of him then turns around to face a printer. The older man, whos still at the reception desk turns to talk to you. "Nice kid" he says and uses an open hand to point to the receptionist. You hadn't been paying attention to the kid, but now you suddenly relies that his smile and gestures to you had an extra layer of 'niceness'. "Yeah, you say, "He's being friendly." The receptionist turns around. "Sorry." He begins, "You didn't know but my pro-nouns are they/them. Could you please respect me when you talk about me?"

You and the older man are a little taken back. Yes you should show some respect, but its kinda rude for the kid to bring it like this. 'Please respect me?' You don't even know his name. "Sure kid, I'll remember next time." Says the older man. The receptionist slides an orange name tags to you with your name on it. You slap it on and leave the office for the gymnasium.
