Chapter 4

Where will Eva head next?

Head for the hills! (Or hill anyway...)

Eva took a deep breath and started walking. She decided to not keep quick pace as it might be better just to look around and be careful while moving in a strange environment. It was a nice warm day - about 20 degrees Celsius she thought - and hiking was easy. She doubted she had been taken that far away from terrain she was familiar with, but she didn't recognize her surroundings.
She tried to think if she had signed up to any silly reality television programs that might find it profitable to put her into strange place without her knowing about it (that would be unethical, but she wasn't quite sure ethics mattered to all producers anyway - if program was profitable it probably could pay off lawsuits). No, she couldn't think of any such sign-ups and she doubted any producer would do something like this when someone else signed her up.
Eva heard a howl and then other howls responded. "No way..." she thought and started hurrying. She didn't quite know what to do in such situation, but it seemed like a prudent idea to go somewhere where wolves were unlikely to get to in case they wanted to defend their territory from her.
She changed her direction slightly as she could see a hillside that looked a lot steeper on her left. It certainly wasn't perfect place for hiding, but she saw a rock face that had a ledge with overhang underneath it. She stepped off the path and climbed sideways to the ledge - at first it was a scramble, but then it changed to proper climbing for a little while until she got the ledge. She stopped for a moment to assess situation and wondered if she had made a mistake - if there were wolves and they found her in their territory they might not leave her alone even if she was safe from them physically.
No point crying for spilled milk she supposed.
She took her backpack off and checked if her mobile had signal - it didn't. She thought about putting on her climbing shoes - she couldn't run as well with them, but it would be a lot easier to move around rock face. She ate a little and drank water.
A little later she could see wolves approaching cliff underneath her and on her right from where she had come. She sighed as this was about what she had feared and expected. Wolves didn't look as hostile as she thought they should have looked like, but that probably didn't mean much. She could try feeding them food she had she supposed. She could also climb up hoping wolves didn't figure out in time where she'd gone or didn't care enough. Of course she could also wait until they got hungry, but that sounded bad. Being near hungry wolves seemed like a bad idea to her.

What will Eva do next?
