He remembers he has to do something

John hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to go and see Ms. Thompson or deal with the paperwork for the Dungeons and Dragons club first. He decided to take care of the paperwork, reminding himself of the importance of getting it done sooner rather than later. He packed up his things and made his way down the hall to the Principal's Office, heading for Ms. Smith's desk.

On his way there, John saw a group of kids gathering in the hallway, their voices raised in bemusement. He couldn't resist the temptation and stepped closer to see what was going on. In the center of the group was a scrawny freshman boy, struggling to keep a stack of textbooks from toppling out of his arms.

John paused for a moment, watching from the side. He recognized the scrawny freshman boy from the end of last year--the one who seemed to struggle to connect with his peers. But what caught his attention this time was the person who was teasing him, the head cheerleader. John had heard rumors about how she had a mean streak, but he had never seen it for himself until now.

For a moment, he considered walking away. He was no fan of bullies, but he didn't want to get involved in someone else's problem. But then, he noticed how the boy's face had turned red, his eyes widening with fear and embarrassment.
