He knows they can't be together

Zack cursed himself, knowing that starting something with Lisa again would only serve to hurt her even more somewhere down the road. His attraction to Victoria and Heather was too much strong and he knew it’d be completely useless to choose the easy route and give another shot to a relationship with Lisa. It was doomed to fail again.

He closed his eyes in a somber look and it’s all that Lisa needed to know. She sighed as she climbed off him and the couch. Zack made no move to stop her.

“I’m sorry, Lisa,” He apologized, finally getting the courage to look up at his former girlfriend. “It wouldn’t be fair to you, we both know that.”

The still nude Lisa turned around, facing him with an unreadable look on her face. “I tried to bury my feelings for you, even made myself believe that Gavin could be a good boyfriend, but I realize now that I was just focusing on your best friend ‘cause it’d be the next best thing from actually being with you.” She whispered emotionlessly before shaking her head and chuckling nervously.

“Lisa, I…”

“Let me finish,” She held up her hand. “Do you have any idea of how much I hate myself right now for thinking, even for a second, that things could be different this time?” She asked, her face getting a slightly angry expression. “I mean, what can Victoria and Heather possibly have that I don’t?”

Zack was speechless, not being able to find an acceptable answer to her question. “I…, I can’t answer that,” He stammered. “I didn’t promise you anything more than friendship.”

“Clearly,” Lisa replied dryly. “Maybe you should grow up a little first, then maybe Victoria or Heather will want something to do with you. Good night, Zachary.”

Zack then watched as Lisa picked up her t-shirt and panties and walked back to her room, pausing only to turn off the lights on the hallway. He stood there, sitting in the darkness for long time contemplating the closing of a door in his life, the door with the name ‘Lisa Rivera’ marked on it.
