Does Bone return with loot before the storm arrives?
He found some food, but no fire tonight.
With a number of stakes, long sticks, a few branches, and even a length of rope she noticed had washed ashore down on the beach, Johanna had put together a shelter that would keep the worst of the rain and wind off of the two survivors. She even had the foresight to dig a ditch around the perimeter and down towards the sandy beach, which would keep much of the groundwater from washing in on them.
"Home sweet home," Bone's voice boomed out as the pirate emerged from the thick vegetation, a bundle of green things in hand, and just in time: the wind was beginning to pick up. He stepped into the shelter and dropped his bounty in front of the other captain. Johanna eyed everything critically. Berries, some roots that looked edible, vines of varying lengths and thicknesses… but nothing that resembled firewood.
Bone spoke before she could ask the question. "Everything is green and mossy in there, and it looks like rain must come through every couple days or so: even the branches on the ground are wet and unsuitable for burning. Tonight’s going to be a cold one.” Johanna huffed, but decided to focus on what they did have rather than bemoan what they lacked. They spent another half-hour or so using some of the vines to further improve tonight’s shelter, even going so far as to fashion a rudimentary cup out of a shell, before retreating inside as the wind intensified further and the rain started to fall in thick sheets.
Johanna, exhausted, sat down and experimentally raised one of the berries to her lips. Bone held the shell-cup outside for a few moments, before bringing it back inside, drinking deeply, refilling it, and offering it to Johanna. “We did a good job here,” He commented, smirking as he sat down next to her, “We won’t starve, we’ll stay dry, and the storm should drive any potential wildlife back into their own nests until morning.” He plucked up one of the roots and bit off a large chunk of it.
The berries were good, the water was refreshing, and Johanna was feeling rather accomplished, all things considered. "Would be nice to have a fire, though." She wolfed down a few more berries and leaned back, finally allowing some of her tired muscles to relax. She idly watched Captain Bone as he finished eating, stretched out his own weary muscles, refilled the shell-cup a third time. (It seemed like it was really picking up out there) and eventually made his way back to sit down next to her.
“Fire will have to wait for tomorrow.” He stretched his arms out again, and Johanna’s gaze was drawn to the tattoo on the back of his left hand. It was a swirling, geometric design encased in a triangle, and according to rumors, was a mark given to him by a demon from whom he'd gained some manner of arcane powers. Sailors were superstitious by nature, and pirates doubly so. Johanna never placed much stock in the rumors. After all, if Bone possessed supernatural abilities, she wouldn't have been able to capture him and sink his ship so easily... not that she was in a position to gloat. The large man turned to Johanna and grinned wide. "Fortunately, there are other ways to stay warm. You’d probably be fine in your big captain’s coat, but me,” He gestured to his well-muscled, but bare, chest and abdomen. “I’d be in your debt if you were to use it as a shared covering instead. And we’d both be better off sharing a bit of body heat.”
Johanna rolled her eyes and quit staring at her well muscled companion, though he was likely sparing her no such mercies. She doubted he would try anything too forward during the night, and he was right: the cold would be worse on him than on her, and their best shot at a restful sleep would probably be close to each other. But could she trust him that much yet?
How much of a risk is Johanna ready to take?
