Chapter 4 by M2J N7 M2J N7

Are you?

Haven't Thought Much About It...

"I haven't thought much about it," you reply as you both release each other and start making your way over to the bus station parking lot.

"Why not?" Jennifer asks. "Isn't this the sort of thing you used to dream about?"

"When I was eight," you respond. "Just learning to control my powers is hard work as it is. Metahuman one-oh-one isn't exactly how it's advertised on T.V."

"How's it all going for you?" she further inquires.

"Telekinesis is coming along pretty well. All it takes is practice, practice, practice. The telepathy I got along with it... Not so much," you say with a frustrated grimace. "Honestly, I'm not sure any of the local yokels even can help me master my powers and the last person who tried to get me to focus my telepathy, I put her in a week long coma."

You throw your stuff into the backseat of her car before loading up into the passenger seat.

"I can't believe my little bro is a superhero..." Jennifer said with mild disbelief as she starts her car.

You snort in dark amusement. "That implies a level of selflesness I don't possess. Besides, I believe the correct term is 'Unaffiliated Metahuman'."

Jennifer sighed. "You don't give yourself enough credit."

You merely shrug in response.

She frowns at you, knowing you don't agree with her. "Well, if you decide to run with one of the super groups, The Emerald Shield is recruiting."

"I'll keep 'em in mind," you state to placate her more than anything else. "How's that boyfriend of yours?"

"We broke up," Jennifer replied.

"Want me to send him into orbit?" you offer.

She responds with a dazzling smile. "Naw. It was a mutual thing." Her expression turns contemplative for a moment. "Can you do that?"

"Not even remotely. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't try if you wanted me to," you say.

"So, have you picked out a super name yet?" Jennifer asks with interest.

"Mastermind," you tell her.

"Fits," she praises. "But kinda sounds like a villain name."

You shrug noncommitally. "I suppose. Speaking of which, how's the villain activity in the area?"

"Almost non-existant, from what I can tell," Jennifer informs you. "With three minor groups of heroes here, anyone with powers looking for trouble goes elsewhere. Although Annabeth, a girl in my psych class, mentioned a group called the Knights of Walpurgis possibly setting up shop here."

"Cheery name," you reply sarcastically.

Jennifer shrugs as she pulls into her parking spot at her apartment. "Apparently, they're one of many groups being **** out of Champion City either by The Legion or The Justice ****."

"Jen... Thanks for letting me stay with you," you tell her.

"You don't need to thank me, James," Jennifer replies smilingly.

"Well, thanks all the same," you reinterate. As you go to get out of the car, you hesitate. "Your roommate... Does she know..."

"That you're coming to stay with us for a while or that you're not even the slightest bit normal?" Jennifer teasingly asks.

You roll your eyes. "Mother and Dad weren't exactly fonts of acceptance and they're not exactly alone in being mistrustful of metas, so I'd like to know if me accidentally using my powers is going to cause a problem."

Will They?
