Harry Potter Universe - Failed Attempt

The shard of corruption ricocheted between the plains of existence, any cosmic overseer in their right mind immediately expelling it from their world before it could take root. This continued for quite some time, none of them willing to sacrifice their plain to contain it until a particularly enlightened overseer took it upon themselves to briefly hold the ring. Leaving their post, they searched for an empty plain where the ring would be virtually harmless, unfortunately having to leave the ring in their own plain.

In short order (at least in cosmic time) the overseer located a dead plain where the ring could not spread its vile corruption and quickly isolated the ring there. Unfortunately, in the short time the plain had gone unsupervised the ring had already begun spreading its power through the ranks of the "Wizarding Community." Without the ring to fuel its spread, the corruption all but halted, and the overseer was able to purge a great deal of its mind affecting power. However they were not able to remove the hermaphroditism completely and it became an accepted, if segregated, part of the wizard gene pool.
