Hannah follows inside

Jane turned to go inside and Hannah followed. “So, this is where you’ve been staying?” Hannah asked looking around. “It’s really nice, how much did it cost?”

EDI spoke up. “This house was priced at 1.2 Billion credits, Captain Shepard. But Commander Shepard acquired the house on a discount after saving the galaxy, so it only costed 1.5 Million credits.”

“Oh thank you, and please call me Hannah,” Hannah said.

“And by now EDI, you can call me Jane ,” Jane said. “I’m no longer in charge of you.”

“Yes, Commnader. I mean, Jane ,” EDI said.

Jane headed for her bedroom as she approached the closet with her clothes and peered inside, towel still wrapped around her. Hannah opened Jane's underwear drawer and said. “Oh you still have these. These are cute. You should wear them.”

Hannah held up Jane's old junior Alliance underwear with frills and a cartoony N7 logo with an armored hamster on the front. “Mom… please.”

Hannah raised her arms in surrender as she sat on the bed. “So have you been seeing anyone lately?”

“Not at the moment,” Jane said. “Liara and I decided it would be best to give each other space. She has her ShadowBroker duties. And I have my… other duties.”

“Oh,” Hannah said. “Was this a mutual decision or one-sided?”

Jane gulped. “Of course it was mutual. I understood. She’s a busy blue woman. And I’m… me.”

“Come here, darling,” Hannah said taking a deep breath.

Jane emerged dressed in an N7 t-shirt and black shorts. She sat down next to her mom and rested her head on her shoulder. Her mom wrapped an arm around her and soon she found herself being cradled by her mom like a baby. “Mom… I loved her,” Jane whispered. “Still do. So much. But her work… requires her to be isolated and we realized that she’s out late nights and I’m retired… no time to see each other.”

“Oh, sweetie,” Hannah said, rubbing her daughter’s shoulders. “It’ll be alright. These things happen. And if anyone can outlive a breakup, it’s you.”

“It just hurts,” Jane said. “Being without her. Watching her do such amazing things and not being able to… kiss her or hold her in my arms.”

Jane rested her head in her mother’s lap, staring at the ceiling. “I was a commanding officer. And now… I’m nothing. I have nothing. Except for this stupidly expensive house.”

“Now you’re just speaking nonsense,” Hannah said. “You have me. You still have your friends.”

“Half of which are dead,” Jane said. “I wasn’t able to save everyone, mom.”

“But you saved trillions of lives,” Hannah said. “Don’t let your friends’ lives be sacrificed in vain. They wouldn’t want you to be so… mopey. I think I know what would cheer you up.”

“What?” Jane said.

Hannah smiled.
