**Backstory & Origin of Powers**

In 1184, during the Genpei War, Kaede was a samurai widow of the Taira clan. After her husband fell at Yashima, she took his armor, donned his ōdachi, and led a suicide charge of 47 women warriors against the Minamoto fleet. As arrows pierced her, the goddess of sakura, Konohanasakuya-hime, appeared in a storm of petals and offered a bargain:

“Your blood for Japan’s spring. Swear to protect its soul, and your blade will bloom forever.”

Kaede swore. Her body dissolved into crimson petals, each embedding a fragment of her soul into Japan’s soil. The next spring, she reformed from a single sakura tree on Tsukikage-jima—now Hana no Tetsu, the eternal Blossom Samurai. For a millennium, she has appeared only when Japan’s heart is wounded: war, famine, or spiritual decay. Villagers call her "The Red Spring".
