Go with Mia

I have decided I am going to go adventuring with Mia. No, it’s not because of the sex she has promised me. She has become my girlfriend now. I would feel bad for standing her up.

So, I get my adventuring gear ready and prepare for my date with Mia.

But to my surprise, Amelia was already I our living room. Waiting for me, ready to go.

"Amelia, your mother told me that you did not feel well yesterday. Are you sure that you are in the condition to go?" I asked. Partially hoping she would give up on going to the mine.

"I'm fine. After sleeping all day yesterday, I felt a lot better. I know how much you want to explore the mine." Amelia says.

I actually don’t. But I don’t feel comfortable telling Amelia about Mia while my mother is here. So, I pretend and make Amelia believe we’re going to the mine just so I can get out of the house.

As we start walking to the mine I notice Amelia seems to have turned back to normal. Having her act like her usual self makes me feel happy. Back to the Amelia I know. But that is when the things Mia told me about Amelia yesterday come back into my mind.

“The Amelia you know is not as innocent as you think she is.”

All of the doubt. All of the fear of what could be is creeping up on me. I know Amelia is hiding something from me. And that it has to do with Kase. I have asked her but she is intentionally keeping me in the dark about. I just can’t take it anymore. I need to know.

“Amelia.” I say as I look into her eyes. “I’ve already asked you twice before and both time you didn’t want to tell me. It felt wrong to try and push you you are leaving me with too many questions. I really need to know. So, I will ask you one last time.”

Amelia looks at me confused and asks, “Darx? What’s going on?”

“I have to know, Amelia. So please, tell me. What on earth is going on between you and Kase.”

But like before, Amelia looks away from me and says, “I told you. There is nothing between us. You don’t have to worry about a thing.” While she brushes some hair behind her ear.

For a third time, she lies to me. And for me, that was the last straw.

“That’s a lie and you know it!” I say as I raise my voice.

Amelia jumps a little in surprise. Probably shocked that I would counter her so forcefully.

“N-no, I-it’s true.” Amelia tries to lie again.

“I have known you my whole life, Amelia!” I tell her, still frustrated that she keeps lieing to me. “You have never been good at lying! You can’t lie even if it was to save your life! Every time you do, you can’t look people in the eyes, or you stutter or you play with your hair! Each time I ask you about Kase you do all of those things! That’s why I know there is SOMETHING!”

“Darx, you don’t understand. It’s not like that.” Amelia starts begging.

“How am I supposed to understand when you don’t tell me!?” I tell her. “It’s even worse when you keep telling me the exact opposite every time.”

I calm myself a bit, then I beg Amelia. “I just want to know the truth, Amelia. So, please. Just tell me what you and Kase have been doing.”

I can read fear in Amelia's expression. She is looking at me with her mouth open, as if she might be willing to say something. There is an awkard silence which fills me with hope. Please, Amelia. I beg of you.

“I … I can’t.” Amelia then says in a very fragile voice.

That’s it then? She’s gona keep hiding it, even now.

“Finally standing up to her, huh?” I hear Mia’s voice.

Amelia and I both look at where Mia’s voice is coming from. She is standing there, decked out in her adventuring gear, ready to go on her date with me.

“What are you doing here?” Amelia says accusingly, the previous fragility in her voice gone.

“Watching you hurt my Darx all over again, apparently.” Mia accuses Amelia while she walks up to me.

This is bad. Knowing Mia, she wouldn’t think twice about telling Amelia we’re dating. But if Amelia is to find out, she should hear it from me.

Amelia raises an index finger at Mia and yells, “I would never hurt …”

But I get in between the two girls and break up their fight.

“Stop it, both of you!” I yell.

I take a breath to calm myself down, then I look at Amelia.

“Amelia, while you have been seeing Kase, while you have been doing with him those things you don't want to tell me about, Mia has been keeping me company.” I tell my childhood friend. “We have grown a lot closer in that time.”

Amelia looks at me with fear and asks,” Darx? What are you saying?”

Mia grabs my arm, hugs it against her chest and says, “He’s saying that while you have been philandering with Kase, we have become a couple. Isn’t that right, sweetie?”

Then Mia plants a kiss on my cheek.

"So, how about you go run off to Kase like you're used to." Mia then tells Amelia.

Mia isn’t wrong. So, I do nothing to counter her. And when Amelia sees me allowing Mia be so close with me, all I see on Amelia’s face is pain. Almost like I’m witnessing the moment her heart breaks or something. There is a short silence between us. Mia is smirking victoriously at Amelia. I am embarrassed that I had sex with Mia before breaking with Amelia. And Amelia … I can only guess what thoughts must have been going through her mind.

The silence was broken by Amelia when she started to cry. Her lips started quivering and tears ran down her cheeks. It hurt me to see her like this. All I wanted was for Amelia to tell me the truth, not for her to start crying. But then she ran away.

“I’m sorry, Darx. But you did the right thing.” Mia then tells me. “If you hadn’t faced up to her, she would have just continued playing with your feeling and you would have been hurt more. Now, come with me and I’m going to make you forget all about her.”

Mia then starts walking away and pulls at my arm, but I’m not moving. I keep my eyes focused on Amelia as I see her running further and further away.

“Darx, come on. Let’s get moving.” Mia says and pulls at my arm again, but I again don’t move.

Frustrated, Mia comes to stand in front of me and says, “Darx, you’re not still thinking about her, right? She was cheating on you.”

I look into Mia’s eyes. My emotions quickly start building up. I try to suppress them, but it doesn’t work.

With barely any strength in my voice I tell Mia, “I just lost my best friend.”

Then for me too, tears start coming down. I hug Mia and let it all out. I don’t care if she sees me crying like a baby. I feel I have a good reason to cry. Amelia, whom I have known for so many years, has become like a stranger to me. We trusted each other with everything. The friend I had is gone now and is never coming back.

Mia’s response was a silent hug. She didn’t say anything. She just allowed me to let it all out. I needed support at that moment, and Mia offered it.

Mia didn’t bother trying to have sex with me that day. She felt that I was simply not in the mood so we just hang out for the rest of the day. We didn’t even go into the forest to do any adventuring.

Later that day we met a frustrated Kase. When he passed me and Mia, he stared at me with such anger, it was like he was shooting daggers at me. I have turned my back on Amelia. He can have her now as far as i cared. What is his problem?

When Mia and I parted, I thanked her for having been there for me.

“That’s what lovers are for, right?” Mia says. “Next time something like this happens, I want to be there for you all over again.”

“Sorry for the failed date.” I tell her. “Try again tomorrow?”

Mia’s face lights up and say says, “Of course.”

“Except this time, I want to pick you up from home.” I say. “Is that alright with you?”

Mia’s face lights up even more after that and she replies, “I would love that.”

After that we parted and while I eagerly awaited the next day, I have a feeling she might be yearning for the next morning even more.

The next day I woke up early and started preparing sandwiches for our trip.

Mom came over to help me, then asked who I was going with, Mia or Amelia?

“Mia.” I said.

“You’ve been spending a lot of time with her recently, haven’t you?” Mom asks.

“We have.” I tell her. “We’ve become quite close recently.”

More than just close. But I wasn’t exactly comfortable with telling my mother we were having sex.

But I guess mom could tell because she then said, “You know, I had always thought it would be Amelia you’d be getting this close with. It surprises me a bit that it ended up being someone else instead.”

“A lot has changed.” I tell mom. I don’t feel like going into the specifics of what happened. Not now at least.

After I got the sandwiches loaded into my backpack, I headed out for Mia’s place.

Just before leaving, Mom called out to me and said, “Be nice to her and remember to be careful, alright sweetie?”

I don’t know why, but I have a feeling my mom might have meant something more than just what she said. I wonder what it could be.

After arriving at Mia’s parents, I knock on the door and get let in by Mia’s grandmother.

“I’m here to see Mia.” I tell the elderly woman.

“I know.” Mia’s grandmother says. “She told me last night you would show up. She is in her room. You know the way?”

“I do.” I tell her. Then I head up to the second floor and knock on Mia’s door three times.

“Good morning, Mia. It’s Darx.” I announce myself. “Are you ready?”

“Are you alone, Darx?” I hear Mia through the door.

“I am.” I say. “Are you ready?”

“Just a moment.” Mia shouts through the door.

She takes a few more seconds, but then she opens her door for me.
