Chapter 5

What should he do?
Go to Jacob's apartment
Leon walked cautiously out from the alley with Jacob. As he looked to the left, he saw the R.P.D. was like a beacon of light in the night.
But he promised to check on Jacob’s mother first. There were abandoned cars all over the street, some of which were still burning in flames. A few mindless vampires were wandering but hardly posing a threat. Leon swiftly crossed the street and safely got to the apartment building.
The door wasn’t locked. He turned on his flashlight and walked inside carefully. The wall behind the reception desk was covered in blood, which made him uneasy. Those monsters must have got in the building already, he thought. If Jacob’s mother were hiding in their apartment, there might be a chance of survival. Finishing the investigation, Leon went to the staircase. Jacob silently followed.
Though there were many blood footprints in the staircase, they haven’t encounter any of those monsters before they reached the third floor. The lights were off in the corridor. Leon was more cautious as he pointed both the gun and flashlight forward and walked more slowly in order to better guard the kid behind him. Within seconds, they’re in front of room 304, where Jacob’s family lived.
The room door was left unlatched and Leon has assumed the worst. He signaled Jacob to stay put. The kid nodded but kept shaking in fear.
Leon opened the door lightly and observed the situation with the flashlight. The living room was mostly normal as leftover bacon and eggs were still on the table with plates and forks left lying around. A knife was dropped to the floor, with a blood trail all the way to the kitchen to the right.
He watched his steps to make no noise and got to the kitchen. A dead body of an old man was laying on the floor. He gasped in shock and refrained himself from screaming before kneeling down to check the corpse. The victim’s throat was slit, by the knife most likely, but there wasn’t much blood on the ground or on the walls. What’s more weird, he died with a smile on his face. Was he drained by the vampires? Leon didn’t find any other wounds on the victim. That explained why this old man did not turn, but...
It was at this moment he heard some noises coming from the bedroom, on the other side of the room. He turned around and noticed there were lights leaking under the bedroom door. The strange noises were like moans or roars, probably a bit of both. Something terrible was in there.
“Oh! Harris! Ah! AH!” Moans of a woman, pitching higher and higher, came from inside the bedroom.
“Mom? Mom! You’re alright!” Recognizing his mother’s voice, Jacob yelled in relief and rushed in the room towards the bedroom, leaving behind all the horrors he witnessed before.
“Hey, wait!” Leon tried to stop Jacob but he was too far away.
Jacob pushed the bedroom door opened and saw his mother, Linda, with her long brown hair dishevelled and her legs spread, laying in bed. A young man with black hair was on top of her and thrusting passionately. Both naked, they let out seductive moans and beast-like roars at the same time. From behind in silhouette Jacob recognized the man as Harris Benson, a kind and nice guy living upstairs who had always lent a helping hand whenever they're in trouble.
“Mom? Mr. Benson? What are you-” Jacob was shocked at the scene.
“Jacob! Get back! They’re not who you knew anymore!” Leon tried to pull the kid away but Jacob was so confused and resisted.
“Oh, Jacob! You’re home!” Linda stared her son with her crimson eyes, smiling, and revealed two tiny, sharp fangs around the corner of her mouth.
Harris turned around with anger and growled at them for interrupting his blissful moment of intimacy, showing his red eyes and white fangs in the dim light. Once again Leon was struck by the familiar headache. He managed to recover from it much quicker this time, however, failed to grab Jacob who was already approaching his mother.
“Come here, Jacob. I want to show you something.” Linda, sitting up from the bed, reached out her hand to her son in delight. Jacob smiled in joy, with his pupils dilated, and kept stepping forward.
“Jacob! No!”
Leon tried to get to the kid one more time but was hit heavily by a frenzied Harris. He flew all the way back in the living room and crashed on a cabinet. But he didn’t have the luxury to rest and recover as Harris jumped across that long distance and pounced on him. The monster roared in fury and, with his newly-grew fangs, tried to take a bite on Leon’s warm neck.
However, all he got was the barrel of the Matilda. Cold.
“Eat this.” Leon pulled the trigger. A mist of blood blasted from the back of Harris’ head and he was neutralized. Temporarily.
After getting up from the floor and rushing towards the bedroom, Leon witnessed Linda burying her head deeply in Jacob’s neck and sucking violently. Jacob was trembling, but still holding his mother’s hand tightly.
Hearing the gunshot in the living room, Linda raised her head in wrath, with her mouth covering in blood, and growled at the man that just came in. A bullet penetrated her skull through the eye and she was immediately silenced. Jacob, already drained by his beloved mom, fell to the floor lifelessly.
Breathing heavily, Leon looked at the three corpses in front of him and held his gun tighter in despair. He promised the kid that he would protect him and he would help his mother, and he failed both.
Grieving couldn’t bring back the dead, but this strange disease could. The earlier encounter at the gas station made him realize that, both Linda and Harris wouldn’t be killed by head shots and Jacob wouldn’t stay dead for too long. If he stayed here, he would become a delicious meal when these monsters resurrected.
As he was about to leave, he saw a bottle of rubbing **** on the bedside table and got an idea. He combined the **** and a strip of cloth to make a Molotov cocktail, and lit it with the gas stove in the kitchen. He threw the bottle into the bedroom, causing fire on the three corpses. As he was running out of the room, he heard more growls coming from the other rooms on this floor. He had no interest in knowing what those could be.
Monsters out of nowhere were swarming the hall of the building, so Leon made a detour to exit from the back door. Luckily, that allowed him to avoid the abandoned bus and car wrecks that were blocking the street. R.P.D. was just a couple of meters away and it seemed that nothing in between could stop him now.
He looked up at the fire light and smoke from the window of room 304, gritting his teeth in sorrow. First day as a police officer he almost lost every civilian he sworn to protect. I could have saved them if I had done better, he kept telling himself.
After a few moments, he collected himself and headed straight to the police station.
