Chapter 17 by IsabellaReyes IsabellaReyes

What's next?

Go through her father's office

The large oak desk sits in the middle of the room, its polished surface gleaming in the sunlight. Its size dwarfs the rest of the furniture, creating an imposing presence that demands respect. Her hand glides along the smooth surface of the desk, her fingers tracing the grain of the wood. The coolness of the material sends shivers up her arm, and she pulls her hand away, her skin tingling.

Isabella took a deep breath, fingers reaching for the handle of the drawer. Inside, she finds a stack of papers, neatly organized and bound together with a paper clip. She pulls the papers out and places them on the desk, her fingers trembling.

The papers are covered in a mess of words, scrawled in her father's handwriting. They are barely legible, the letters jumbled and confused. She squints, trying to make sense of the pages. Her heart pounds, her breath catching in her throat.

Isabella takes a moment, and begins reading through the documents. There is a mixture of official looking documents, signed and stamped with the seal of the president.

There are also a handful of notes and diaries, her father's private thoughts spilling out onto the page.

She reads the documents slowly, her eyes scanning each word carefully. She sees names, dates, locations. She sees plans, strategies, timelines.

She sees things she did not expect.

The first few pages are simple reports, detailing military movements and supply shipments. Nothing too alarming.

But then she gets to the personal notes, and the tone changes.

She sees the words "rebellion" and "guerillas". She sees names like "Serrano" and "Romero".

She sees a plan. A plan to crush the rebellion and stamp out the guerillas once and for all.

And she sees the final page, the one her father never got to finish.

It's a list. A list of names, and what her father had planned for each one.

Some are crossed out, some are not.

"Serrano" has a question mark next to it.

"Romero" is circled twice.

Her fingers clench the paper, her eyes stinging. She can't believe what she's reading, can't believe what her father was planning. He was going to purge his cabinet after crushing the rebels, killing or imprisoning every single one of them.

He never got the chance.
