Chapter 3 by Danielle2722 Danielle2722

What do you do?

Go for the gun.

With the world in slow motion, you glance aside to the holstered handgun and dart towards it. At the same time, the older man holds out an open palmed hand towards you, in the process of calling something out, while the young man begins to train his rifle on you. He barely manages to get the words "Hands U-" out, before the holster is in your grip.

You convert your remaining momentum into a dive as the boys first shot resounds. Covering your unarmored face with one mechanical elbow while dextrously manipulating your handgun from its holster with a single hand, you're unable to dodge his aim. You're fast, but not bullet fast. The impact of a rifle round slams into your cybernetic thigh, deflecting from its armour with a shower of sparks and throwing off your balance.

You finish the dive on your back, perpendicular to your assailants, with your gun in hand. Before the rifle's action can cycle and the kid can fire again, you're back on your feet, pistol raised, and firing. The older man barely made it two steps in before he's struck in the chest with a tight burst of armor piercing fire. The ammunition tracker in your eyes counts down from 15 to 12.

Its expected trajectory displayed in your vision before he fires, a simple sidestep, perfectly timed, takes you out of the path of the young man's next shot. The older man hasn't even hit the floor before your second three-round burst hits home, bringing the second attacker down.

Keeping the weapon aimed at the cargo door, in case more bandits are waiting outside, you slowly approach, taking your time. When it becomes clear that you're alone once again, you take a moment to examine where you were hit. Only a ragged hole in your leggings and a scratch on your thigh armor.

Good thing that wasn't AP.

Quickly searching through the possessions of your attackers, you mostly find assorted pieces of junk which you immediately discard. Of interest though, is more ammunition for the rifle the young man was carrying, and a data chip with the letters "J-EP" scrawled on the surface, which you pocket. Slinging the attackers rifle over your back, you give the two men one last glance before stepping outside.
