Chapter 9 by MidbossMan MidbossMan

What gift will you give Belit?

Give Belit the snack you were saving

Unfortunately, you weren't the type of person to carry a lot of money on your person. You'd already set down your war chest in your room, so right now, you were pretty penniless. The only thing you had to give her was a snack bar of oats and fruit that you'd been carrying, intending to eat after your journey outside the city. You tapped her on the shoulder, signalling for her to turn around, the placed it into her gloved hands.

She inspected it for a moment, unwrapping it from its paper, then frowned. It didn't seem to be a frown of contempt, but rather, something a little more sad and less angry, judging by the tilt of her eyebrows. "Uh... I mean, thanks, but I don't actually need it," she murmured, pushing it back into your hands. "What is that, anyway? A snack bar?"

You nodded, but it didn't seem like she was actually curious. It seemed like she wanted to laugh at you for picking something so plain, but she couldn't muster the humor.

"Ya know... Truth be told, growing up, I didn't always have something good to eat. I mean, this bar probably doesn't seem like much, but... it would have been a better meal than I'd eat some days. So, you know... it's not nothing, you giving me something like this," she smiled. "When I became a saintess, that wasn't just Geod picking me to do some good. It was also him saving me from life in the slums. Maybe you know, maybe you don't, but not everybody in Missionaire lives the same. Becoming a saintess gave me a ticket out of there. After that, there were people to help me train and study. My whole life changed."

She placed her hand on one of the ornate helmets nearby, running her finger along the engravings in the gold metal. "So I've been blessed, in the most literal sense, by Geod. Now, I've gotta give it back to Him and His people. So... I need you, too. We gotta do this together." She reached out for your hand and shook it this time, giving you a more honest smile than you'd seen up to this point.

It seemed there was more to Belit than met the eye, certainly more than the recruit commander's dossier had alluded to. You'd try to remember that part of her when her taunting and bullying became too much to bear.
