Getting to Know My New Friends

We arrive at Brad and Janet's apartment and Brad locks the front door and nails a two by four to it. I tell him we don't need to worry about other vampires because they can't get in without being invited in." It's not other vampires I'm worried about, it's looters and potential vigilantes I'm concerned with." Then Brad goes to the closet and unlocks a gun safe. He pulls out two magnum handguns and gives one to Janet and one to me and gets an **** rifle out as well." Just in case." I see a picture of Brad and Janet wearing army fatigues." You two are in the army?"

Janet answers while Brad goes to the bedroom to get more ammo in case we need it." We used to be, Brad was a captain in the special forces and I was an army nurse, we met on deployment to Afghanistan." She continues." Since then Brad graduated law school and became an associate personal injury lawyer and I'm now an ER nurse." Brad chimes in." Law school is really where I learned to spread the bullshit." We all laugh at that. They then ask about me." Before all this I was a college student majoring in economics with a minor in psychology." We talk a bit longer. We discuss getting to know what our new abilities are as vampires and the possibility of hooking up with other vampires.

As the sun comes up Brad and Janet go to the bedroom to sleep and I take first watch. Brad hands me the **** rifle and tells me to keep the selector switch on semi- auto. With the windows boarded up and the drapes closed we don't have to worry about sunlight. When twilight comes we'll hunt again.
