Chapter 5 by fyreant fyreant

Who will you be?

Franziska Weber, House Leontes

Franziska Weber is a studious but short-fused and easily flustered transfer student from another country. Though a part of the wizarding world her entire life, she has never quite fit in no matter what the social climate. In her home country she was a part of a large, historic, well-established magical family which is known for encouraging their members to explore new horizons and seek out opportunities to advance their honor and prestige all over the world. Being a new transfer to Boarbristle Academy despite already being a second-year only complicates things. Hot-tempered, detail-oriented, and with something of a chip on her shoulder, Franziska has had to become a skilled duelist and cunning magician by necessity. One of the reasons that Franziska often seems ready to snap at anyone who disrespects her is because of her appearance: at 4'11" tall and with a bustline that could generously be called modest, she has already had to inform several students and instructors through gritted teeth that she just turned 20 years old and did not "skip any grades" to get here. On one occasion, while wearing a hood, she was mistaken for a first-year boy and driven to her first act of exhibitionism by yanking up her uniform and exposing her perky A-cups for a whole room, followed by slapping the offending Minerval student across the face. Franziska has large blue eyes on a dainty, girlish face, and wears her strawberry blonde hair in two long, braided pigtails that cascade down to her shoulders. Her little button of a nose is often turned arrogantly upward, and her lips are most accustomed to being pursed tightly in a slight frown. Though she is a bit mortified by being suddenly dropped in the midst of school known for their sexual vices and antics, Franziska knows that her being sent here was no accident - her family expects her to bring back a groom (preferably, although a bride would be better than nothing), hence her being sent to a place with such wild libido after spending her first year at a different wizarding school doing nothing but burying herself in books and throwing down the dueling gauntlet to anyone who looked at her funny. Part of the truth behind her standoffishness is that Franziska had a steady, long-term boyfriend when she was a teenager, but had him stolen away by a seductive older student, leaving town in her arms without even leaving Fran a goodbye note. She's aware that her friends and family in her homeland want to see her get over it, therefore she feels obliged to at least give the 'dating' scene at Boarbristle a try in between pridefully training her mind and body.

Franziska's fierce side, the importance she puts on honor and promises, and her relatively conventional views on sex made her a natural fit for House Leontes.

A knock comes from outside your dormitory room, awakening you to a mouthful of your own blonde hair. Since you have to let it down when going to bed, it always ends up getting in your own face when you toss and turn in a restless sleep... which, since you've come here, has been 'always'. "Pfeh!" blowing it out of your face with a quick exhalation, you otherwise remain perfectly still. Maybe if you pretend to be a deeper sleeper, your well-meaning house mates will leave you alone. That comfortable illusion is shattered when the knock repeats, this time with a playful musical rhythm to it, followed by a whistle.
"Vhat do you want?!" you demand of the closed door, as you hop up and grab a hairbrush. You blush a bit but don't correct yourself - your accent often starts to slip into your speech when you are distracted or agitated, which, since you've come here, has been 'always'. "I don't have any classes today, nor was I informed of any house events for the day with the exception of the feast. The evening feast , which is to say, not *morning*!"

A girlish giggle floats in from the other side of the door. "Helloooo in there. Franziska, right? The new girl? Could you please open up? I was just going to ask if you needed anything or might want a better tour of the academy - I was asking around and none of the other members have seen you around except at classes for the entire week." There's a pause. "You aren't _still _embarrassed and sulking about your clothes dissolving when you fell out of the bo-"

"When I was PUSHED OUT!!" you shout back, your voice cracking. A flush rising in your face, you remember how important it is not to let it seem like such childish pranks are getting to you. "And no! I am *not* engaged in ze - the sulking! I have already forgotten it!" With it tight in your grip, you accidentally pull on a split end in your hair, making you wince. "Grrrr.." you mutter under your breath, snatching up your wand and taking the shortcut once again, casting a quick spell that fixes your hair and smooths your rumpled uniform. No sooner have you pulled it on than the door swings open, causing you to throw a glare at the tall, slender girl standing in the doorway. "Hey...! I was changing in here, you know! Was the door not locked?" Your only response from the student in the door is a shrug, followed by her taking your hand and pulling you out into the hall. It's only after your own door swings closed that you remember that in between pulling on your stockings and sliding on your loose-fitting uniform that you entirely forgot your undergarments.

"Oh, my name is Gillian by the way, Gillian Merigold!" she beams, oblivious to your lack of enthusiasm. "And I'm afraid I'll have to insist on showing you around a little! You see, Housemaster Firetail noticed that you seem to have had some difficulties acclimating yourself so far, so she asked me to come and introduce you to some of the other first-years. Really, you ought to consider yourself an honorary first-year - and that isn't a bad thing! As Fergus said, many of our members would envy you for having a fresh start like this!"

"Pfah!" you give a little snort. "A fresh round of hazing you mean? It was not merely the boat ride - Some little... invisible strings or other such magical trickery keep making me trip in all of my classes. Always, it would seem, angled in such a way that it makes my skirt go up. Yesterday, my hair bands were transmuted into live earthworms! EARTH! V-WORMS!" Gillian does look a little shocked by that, and her bubbly, bouncing way of walking slows to a shuffle, as she releases your hand. "O-oh. I'm sorry Franzi, I had no idea."

"Don't call me that!" you blush again (people normally only call you that diminutive when they're trying to annoy you - which, since you've arrived, seems to be always). She continues. "Really - you must believe me, it's no Leontes student behind that! The students from Minerval and Draconis are always playing mean-spirited pranks on our new members. That's why you should come down and socialize a bit more with the rest of us!" She leans down to get close enough to whisper in your ear. "Nothing like a bit of the old slap an' tickle on an off day to get your mind of your troubles, right right?"

"Errr," you say noncommittally. "Or," Gillian says, adroitly moving to another topic as she takes your hand again, "If you really think someone is specifically out to get you as opposed to just the usual pranks that all new students have to deal with, well, you could always go down to the Minerval dorms and ask one of them - they're good at picking up on little conflicts and petty vendettas like that. Personally I suspect you might've spurned the advances of a Draconis without really meaning to and got on his or her bad side that way... and Minervals love getting involved in other people's drama." You don't say anything in response to that, but you do raise an eyebrow in interest.

"Oh," she says, "But really, I would suggest you just try to focus on the good and put your energies towards making new friends! If you'll come down to the common room there are little groups of new Leontes students making plans to go check out parts of the academy... the library, the village of Turnbuckle, even the edge of the Weirding. In fact I believe there might even be a tournament in the field today! Strength in numbers, right? If you're with a few of your housemates it's less likely that other students will feel at liberty to pick on you! What do you say?"

You finally allow yourself a slight smile. As much as it's your reflex to be prickly, you actually do appreciate the fact that the members of your house are so concerned about you having a good time of your first week at the academy. Still...

With a half joking voice, you look up to Gillian and ask "So... this really was the housemaster's request, was it not? You are not merely bringing me out like this because you... want to get me into bed or anything strange like that?" Gillian laughed at that, shaking her head, her long brown ponytail flipping back and forth. "Oh no, dear! I already have a boyfr- erm. Another student that I'm quite close with." she blushes, which finally makes you feel like you've gained a victory. "I really want to emphasize that," Gillian says, eyes flicking nervously, "...because, um, one of the other things that the Housemaster wanted me to make you aware of is that there aren't enough rooms for you to have one all to yourself on a permanent basis... so we'll be room-mates, starting tomorrow. Best to have some fun and get to know the school better before we deal with all that, right?"

You can only give an exasperated sigh, and a nod. Of course. "Well, I cannot argue with your reasoning so we should get to it then." you say with a nod. "Let us..."
