For ever problem a solution
The walk to the arcane laboratory was fairly short. However, in the time you had you came to one conclusion, Bonius was terrifyingly smart. He had an amazing understanding of this world and how it worked. Fortunately, most of the natural forces like thermal exchange, electric flow, and gravity worked in an identical, or near enough, way to what you expected. The magic came in and shoehorned it’s own set of rules in. And how those rules interacted was mind numbing. If not for your prior knowledge and nature as a magic savant you would have been in so much trouble.
Fortunately, your starting point seemed to impress the Archmage. He seemed very surprised at your understanding of the non magical forces, especially with how little you understood of the rules of magic. By the time your group reached the lab you and Bonius were delving into technical and theoretical rabbit holes.
As you all stepped into the room the temperature dropped. Not in a figurative way but quite literally. In the center of the room contained by a magic circle was a massive block of ice. Looking into the ice you can make out a weird amalgamation of magic. And what your god granted special knowledge told you was a hateful and spiteful soul, lovely. Reaching out you gently tap the imprisoning ice carefully not to disturb the layers of magic holding the disembodied mass.
“Is this him?” “Yes, my lord husband. That is what remains of our betrayer and tormentor.” You can hear the hate and venom in the voice of the Elven queen. You look over and catch her looking at the ice block with a thousand yard stare. “Illenwyn, you said you hade made progress?” Time to get her mind of the past.
“Yes, if you look over here.” She shakes of the past and leads the group over to a smooth raised section of wall. The symbols and formulas remind you of a chemistry or math lecture within various symbols that look to be representing longer or more complex formulas. Bonius seems to take it all in at a glance, then begins to stroke his beard and contemplate the ritual.
As the explanation is about to begin you hold up a paw. “Before we begin let me just state, my understanding of magic is less than rudimentary. While I am able to perform some magics intuitively this will likely require you to break it down to a layman’s level.”
You watch the reactions, the women look somewhat surprised as if they had forgotten your newness to this art. Bonius looks at you and seems to nod in appreciation, wonder how many times he had to convince someone of how little they knew before he could start to teach.
Over the next half hour to the best of their ability, with help from Bonius, Illenwyn, Bixi, and Sephillia explain what they have come up with so far. The long and short of it is three problems. The first is getting the magic out of the deamons soul without letting it escape. They have this handled… mostly. The only problem in this step will be containment. The next step will be separating the elves magic from the deamons. This is one of the current stumbling blocks as none of the women know of a reliable method of creating this separation. The final hurdle is a method of evenly distributing the magic back to the elves.
Looking at the problems your gifted abilities begin to kick in. “Archmage Bonius, correct me if I’m wrong but does Illenwyn have a connection to her people?”
The sage takes some time to consider your question, “theoretically a ruler would have a spiritual connection to all their people. It would be extremely faint though.”
“And if that ruler had knowingly taken it upon themselves to become the focus for a magical pact on behalf of their people?” “That would strengthen that link greatly.” He looks between Illenwyn and you putting the dots together. “My boy, of all the types of breath among dragons what is yours?” You can hear the excitement in his voice. “I have access to magic and spirit breath.”
The old man cackles in delight. “Ladies let me at that slate.” The old master practically bounces over to the wall with the formulas and begins to frantically modify and add to the magical equations. For the next few minutes he scribbles and erases muttering to himself all the time. Soon he steps back and considered his work before turning and begins to explain his work. The long and short of it comes brown to using you draconic nature to effectively bypass parts of the problem effectively turning you into a combination filter, focus, and distribution system. The process will then rely on you using your breath to strengthen the spiritual connection between Illenwyn and her people then pass the power on to them. It is a simple and elegant solution. The one drawback is this is going to hurt like hell for you. Oh well a good solution now is better than a perfect solution later.
Looking around you ask “ ladies, do any of you have any suggestions to add?” After consideration they are only able to make small additions and tweaks, Sephillia has a few inputs that look like the will minimize the pain you will need to suffer, with things looking as good as they will get you all lock in the ritual and agree to begin preparation tomorrow.
