First Day

Emily Jefferson nervously opened the door to the Lancaster law firm. She'd been a Lancaster once, long ago, but her parents had gotten divorced, and her mom had remarried and moved to Jamaica. It was paradise for her mom, but Emily had missed South Carolina. She'd missed the privileged life.

Her father had set her up with a job as an assistant for Beau Carrington, a young partner at the firm. Slender and boyish, the man had a III behind his name, signifying his part in a local dynasty. Emily thought, getting Beau his morning coffee, if she played this right, she could rejoin the local well-to-do in an even higher band than she'd left it.
