Chapter 47
by ShadeWriter
How's their night?
Firery.... not for those reasons
He got up from the bed, trying to get the blankets off him.
And Raven.
She seemed a little clingy in her sleep so it was a little hard to get up without waking her but he had to hit the rest room. Eventually he was able to get up and go about his business when he started hearing noise from the street. Cole finished up and looked out the window. He saw a a series of cars, mainly emergancy vechicles flying down the road with their lights on.
He followed them along the street to see where they were going, to the point he had to open up the window and lean out. About a block or two away he saw a faint glow over the rooftops and a pillar of smoke.
"Oh.......,"
He waited till he closed the window before cursing, running back into the bedroom.
Raven was already up, either woken by his own movement or the growing noise outside. She was staring at the tv as a reporter was doing a late night report. He moved over to stand with her to get a better veiw of the report. A nearby building had caught fire and all sorts of emergancy personal and news crews where at the scene, trying to save or document as much as they could.
"Cole..., we're not..." Raven started, hoping to cut him to the quick about helping out.
"Raven the water main."
He was right, the news earlier that night had talked about a large water main being damaged, and as if on cue, the reporter was handed a note and started to dicuss how the local fire fighters were struggling to make up the lower water pressure and for any possible mage good with water to head to the site at once. She muted it as the reporter started listing off the number of unaccounted.
"OF Course this is happening....," she grumbled as she went over to a dresser and started to dig, "Can't have a moment's peace huh?"
"So we're..., OOFF!" he was cut off when something was shoved into his stomach.
It took him a bit to get a hold of it as it was slick but he eventually held up a bracelet of some kind with a round gem on the top of it. Well, a fake gem as it felt more like plastic. Raven had one on herself and she twisted the little gem, letting shadow coat over her body. When it withdrew, she was in her super hero outfit..., at least the modified version she wore for this world.
That long cape with the feather pattern at the hem of it. The extra padded protection on her chest and legs, along with belts that crisscrossed it, along the ballroom like bird mask that hung at her side. No yellow belt though and even her outfit was all greys and blacks; lacking the dark purple from her usual outfit. But if comics of her were in this world, best to try and use a different outfit.
"You know I was wondering about... the costume." he flatly put out, "Where it was that is."
"This one? Or the leotard? I don't wear the leotard one that much these days, not alone. Usually with shorts or pants these days." she said, picking up the bird mask and putting it on, "I can't take credit for it; the Flashes gave me the idea."
"So that means I have.... WHOA!!!" he had started to tinker with the device before he too was coated in darkness.
When the darkness faded, Cole stood there in a suit of his own. It was a two piece black suit, with shoulder pads and an armored chest piece. Not metal, some other light material; his legs and arms were also amored with the same possibly thick plastic material. Something taken from sports gear? Then again he didn't really understand how heroes made their suits. A helmet was attached to his belt, which had a couple different pouches. The helmet was modeled after a wolf with it's mouth slightly open, and the visor covering said open mouth.
Looked like someone upscaled a minion motif suit...., or a bootleg power ranger.
"When did you take my measurements?" he asked as he patted down his outfit.
"Oh I've had a few instances, usually when you're asleep." she said patting him on the back, "To be honest, worked on this a bit after you fainted on your fight. It's NOT done, nor is it super protective though. Maybe on par with Kevlar, probably below it honestly; I haven't had time to weave protective wards into it... and that takes a lot of time to do anyway. And it's just cobbled together with some left over pieces I used in making my own suit, along with a few swaps from the house. I had to work with what I had."
"This was just made in case you went and did something stupid again. If we get to my world, perhaps I'll get Cyborg to make you an actual suit." she said as she waved a hand out in front of her, summoning a portal, "Shall we?"
Everyone was so focused on the burning building; from those on the street, those inside buildings nearby, and those in the helicopters above.
So it was easy to find an out of the way roof top overlooking it to teleport to. The pair appearing from beneath a water tower, which let them get a good look at the building. It was maybe three stories tall, and rather wide. Looked more like a dorm than apartment. Was this some kind of orphanage or private school? He missed getting a name from the TV report. He turned to Raven or was staring over at the building.
"Have to ask... what IS the plan? I mean I was gung ho to do this but...," he started as he turned towards his partner.
Only to be cut off as a wave of water soaked him. He looked and saw that Raven was also soaked as she sent the water back through another portal. No doubt she took it from the water tower and now probably sent it somewhere else to make sure there wouldn't be a trace of them. The cold didn't seem to soak into the suit that much though so he wouldn't get a flu from this.
"That should help you not catch on fire." she said as she opened up another portal.
She watched for a minute before focusing, and the small round hole seemed to catch fire. After taking a step back to make sure he wasn't burnt, he took another look and realized it wasn't burning. It was what was on the other side that was on fire. Raven seemed to have conjured up a two way view portal and was controlling the one inside the building. The view changed as she moved it around, no doubt like some otherworldly roomba.
"And because I know you have the question on your lips." She started without turning to look at him, "I could teleport us in there but I find teleportation easier if I know the place, can see the spot, or can link myself to someone."
".... I suppose that explains all the times you've teleported to me then." he muttered. Being connected by the Marriage was pretty binding, even before the consummation. Raven probably just piggy backed her magic on that.
"Quite. So the plan is to try and find anyone still in the building, and either lead them to the firefighters, do it the other way around, or get them out ourselves. I'm sorry I'm not going to risk a big 'make a portal around everyone still in the building' spell. That would instantly ping me to anyone taking a look."
Cole nodded as he let her do her work. She had this... different imposing air around her now. This wasn't how it was when she was angry, or trying to intimidate someone but her 'hero' self. Determined, focused, alert; it was very different to how it seemed in the comics. Probably because he was right next to her and could actually see the small changes in her face or the way her eyes flicked to what she might have thought was motion.
"Got one." "Hmm?"
He had to snap out of his too focused attention to react, which made Raven give him a bit of a glare. She gestured towards the portal. On the other side he saw an older man huddled with a young girl, probably his granddaughter or maybe he was a caretaker of the place. Whoever they were, they were trapped in what seemed to be play room, the support beams blocking any exit they could use. The older man was coughing, having given his young charge a piece of cloth to cover her mouth.
"Alright.... so how do we get them out?" he asked, turning to her.
"It'll be okay Wendy..., just keep your head down and breath slowly."
"Grandpa...., I don't wanna die." the little girl said, tears in her eyes.
He wanted to say she wouldn't but that was getting harder to believe each passing moment. The flames were closing in and that didn't kill the the smoke most certinaly would. He was already starting to get light headed. He lived a long life and... well everyone was scared to go. But he didn't want his little girl to go out with him like this either. Never one to pray before, he gave a silent prayer to some hire power, any power; so long as Wendy got out, he'd do anything.
The sound of wood splintering signaled the end was coming.
"OI! Someone in here?"
.....Was that a...
"If you can hear me answer!"
"YES... we're in here!" The old man called out, wondering who was mad enough to come here.
His answer came as he saw something slam into the beams, cracking them in half before slamming down again to fully break it. His eyes were fading and there was a lot of smoke but it looked like a fireman? He even had the ax but he couldn't tell. Before he could say anything the man rushed in, pushed them down and covered them with something before placing a few good axe strikes on the rubble blocking the window. He backed up then, dropped the axe and grabbed a mostly intact table and tossed it.
Outside was chaos. Fire trucks trying to work with the lower water pressure of the area, reporters trying to get footage, fire fighters gearing up to head inside, the few volunteer mages attempting to work their magic.
And all that came to a halt as a flaming table slammed through the second story window.
"HERE! LADDER HERE!!!" A voice cried out, a sheet waved from the window.
That's all that was needed for the crews to get in action. A truck was put into position and the ariel ladder hosted, with firefighters going up the ramp in record time. Right near the window, knelt down in a wet blanket was an old man and young girl; who they quickly took out of the building. But there was no way for an old man to toss such a large object was there? At the same time there wasn't anyone else in the room?
So what had just happened?"
"You SURE that was a good idea?"
"No. But I suppose mysterious savior sounds better than people suddenly vanishing and then reappearing in a black portal." Raven replied as she helped him back through her portal.
The plan had been simple; Raven sent Cole inside through her magic, then using his own Shadow manipulation, he'd break through obstructions for the actual rescuers and signal where the people were or get them out himself if possible. Between the smoke and his own ability to 'make' the tools and gear needed to pass as one; all that should be left is a strange nameless firefighter.
Hopefully that would be enough to mask their appearance in this matter.
"Now if you're ready to go again, I have found someone else that could use a hand."
How's the Rescue going?
