File #2 Ending 4.2 - The lone wolf

Fran woke up in the peaceful hotel room the next morning. She was confused because the last thing she remembered was her fighting Bruce in the mansion and being infected. She checked her right arm in panic, only to notice that the wounds had almost healed up. She should've felt hot and horny, driven by the urge to feast and fuck. But she didn't. Instead, she felt all good and normal, which was unusual.

"James?" She called your name and looked around, but she couldn't find you.

Just when she was about to get off the bed, she saw an envelope sitting quietly on the bedside table. Weird, because usually it was her who left a note there while you were still asleep.

She reached out with her hand trembling and picked up the envelope. It had her name written on it, and she was very familiar with this handwriting. She took a deep breath to collect herself before opening it and reading the letter inside.

Dear Fran,

When you are reading this, I've already left the town.

There was only one cure, and I had to use it on you. So, don't be afraid, you're fine.

Believe me, I want to stay by your side more than ever, but I can't. You might be able to accept the monster I've become, but I can't accept the me who could hurt you at any moment, who could corrupt you and make you a monster like me.

I really want to say goodbye to you in person, but I know that once I do, I won't be able to let go. Please, don't try to find me. I want you to go on living. I hope you find someone, someone better than me, and share a happy life with him. But if you can't, that's all right. You can be on your own. You can take your time. Just promise me you'll live well.

Thank you for loving me, Fran. Goodbye.

James

Fran clutched the letter to her chest with both hands and dissolved into wrenching sobs. Everything the two of you had been through together came flooding back to her. With every intimate moment she recalled, her resolve grew firmer.

"You dummy..." Fran wiped her tears away as she stood up and ran out of the room.

You were sitting in the back row of the long-distance bus with the window open, breathing in the fresh air. You didn't know where you were going. You hadn't planned that yet.

You believed that you'd made the right choice. If you stayed by Fran's side, you would only keep hurting her and holding her back in the name of love, while she would just silently endure it. You had to let her go. She deserved better. She deserved to be happy.

You looked at the horizon outside the window and gave a faint, sorrowful smile.

The chime sounded in the distance. The bus departed on time and rolled slowly out of the bus stop. By the time Fran reached the bus stop, breathless, the bus had already vanished beyond the horizon.
