What should he do?

Fight his way through

Chapter 6 by FreakyFreak

Sighing quietly to himself, Robert set his pack down, latched his healing potion onto his belt, and readied his sword. It may be old and somewhat beat up, but it could tear through flesh. In his hands, it had cut a bear, a human, and a bugbear. Goblins were much smaller, and honestly, much more tempting to hit. He'd be fine. The sword was as long as a spear for them. He was a fighter, lacking experience be damned.

Taking a deep breath and steeling his nerves, he stepped out from behind the tree, and approached the front of the camp. Two goblins were sat at the entrance, drinking and talking. One took notice of him, and burst out laughing. "Who the fuck is this?!" He cried with humor, laughing wildly. "He looks like an idiot!" His friend choked on his drink and started laughing between breaths.

Robert lunged forward with a broad slash, and his sword cut through both goblins torsos, ending their laughter and fun. It was easy.

Unfortunately, a few goblins took notice of the intruder, and sounded out the alarm. "Some fucker's killed the two out front!" One shouted, bringing an end to the partying at large. "Kill the bastard!" "Capture him like the other! We'll get double the price!" "Teach him a lesson on why you don't pick a fight with goblins!" They shouted over each other, charging in equal measures towards him and their gear.

Robert split the first drunken and unarmed idiot that got to him through the skull, and kicked another away. A cup of ale was thrown his way, and he was forced to block it, momentarily losing his line of sight on them.

Three goblins came at him as one, unarmed except for a single wooden stake that used to be part of their defenses. One of them leaped at him, and he managed to dodge and then swing his sword into the next one, but that left him open for the one with the stake to stab him in the thigh.

Robert cried out in pain, and jammed the pommel into the goblin's face, concussing him. With one hand, he took out the stake and tossed it, while he turned to loosely swing his sword at the recovering first goblin, taking her down before she could retaliate.

The goblin he kicked away earlier returned, and was ended with a quick stab to the gut. And then a burst of flame erupted on the poor bastard's back. "Godsdammit, get out of the fucking way you twat!" Yelled the spell caster from further back. Seeing him readying another spell, Robert ducked aside to use the various meat and skulls on stakes as cover. Another fire bolt whizzed by, followed by an arrow and a rock. Seeing a group of goblins actually equipped for battle charging his way, he yanked a stake of skulls out of the dirt and lobbed it at them, causing a pile up as he moved further aside, cutting past them towards the loot to cut off any more equipping of arms.

Another rock was thrown, and it caught him in his unprotected shoulder, which left him staggered just long enough to be unable to dodge the fire bolt that came next, slamming into his chest plate, fortunately, even though it still hurt.

He recovered fast enough to push back the closest attacker, and got an arrow in the arm. "Fuck!" He exclaimed, eyes searching wildly for a way out of this, back to the loot pile, swiping his sword at any who got close. He picked up a shoddy shield to protect him from range attacks at the moment. He wasn't strong enough. He should have chosen a different plan of action.

"Get me out of here!" Came an unexpected cry.

Startled, Robert whipped his head around, finding the large bag in the pile wriggling. A woman was inside. He turned back to the goblins, stabbing at one that had inched forward. These monsters. How dare they kidnap a woman? Robert steeled himself.

"Don't worry, I'll save you!" He said confidently, glaring down the remaining eight goblins.

"Just get me out!" She shouted back. He ignored her. It wasn't safe yet.

With the goal of saving the woman, Robert felt his strength and energy rekindle. He'd never felt this strong before. If this is what it was like to protect women, he could do anything for women.

One of the goblins snarled, and shoved their nearest companion. "Get him!" He demanded. Crying out, six goblins rushed him, wielding various haphazard weapons. The last two stayed back, readying magic and bow.

With determined power rushing through his veins for perhaps the first time in his life, Robert met their charge with a shout, slashing through two of them before they could reach him. An axe was swung his way, and he managed to clumsily catch it on the wooden shield he had picked up. He managed to stab her as well, before a fire bolt came flying and forced him to relinquish both his sword and shield to the newly made corpse in order to dodge backwards in time.

Another goblin came at him with a club, and he caught it in one gauntlet before ripping it out of his hand, clobbering him across the face, and then throwing it at the ranged goblins. do delay their next attacks. With the next two readying their attacks, he grabbed up the goblin he was dealing with, and threw him with all his strength, bowling those two over. Dashing back to his sword, he yanked it out of the corpse, and quickly went a stabbed and sliced open wounds on the downed ones.

With the last two still shooting at him, he had little choice but to close the distance. With a roar, he charged them, powering through the fire bolt to the shoulder and two arrows to his torso, ramming his sword hilt deep into the ranger, and then stabbing the wizard with the ranger still on his blade.

It was over.

He had won.

He had won?

Just him against fourteen goblins?

Robert gasped for air as he pushed the green corpse off his blade, feeling the exhaustion settle in right next to the pride. With a tired grin, he staggered over to the still struggling captive. "I've got you." He breathed, dropping to his knees and relinquishing his sword to undo the knot around the opening.
