Chapter 66 by yamidamian

Once again free, what to do now?

Feed curiosity. And maybe a little rampaging. As a treat.

Well, there's only one way to find out what this library is talking about-trying out the ability, and seeing what happens! I start with the nearest living this to me-the grass I was lying upon. The assimilation is wholly uneventful-no apparent resistance I can feel. When I Absorb it, that's where things get a bit more intriguing. It's a similarly easy process, my hyperdeveloped Endurance quickly overwhelming it-so much that it essentially disintegrates to get devoured into my form. The physical sustenance was nonexistent-but mentally, that's another story. As I 'ate' it this way, my mind was flooded with knowledge about exactly how it was structured to an intense degree. Everything from the peeling away of the blades steam at the collar, to the spread of its stolon and rhizomes from it's node.

A bit of focus, and I realized that I could re-create the structures within my own flexible shape. Unlike my tentacles, it wasn't remotely a natural shape for them to have-but I could form a layer of grass over myself, constructing it from my library. The second I didn't focus on maintaining it, though-just like extra tendrils, they sunk back into my sea of flesh. Seeing the possibilities, I could feel something grow within me. Hunger, curiosity, couldn't name exactly. Heck, with the way I had joined soul and body, maybe there wasn't much of a distinction between the two anymore anymore. All I knew was, I needed to feed it, and I knew exactly how.

So, I was once again mobile, my metaphorical feet a bit farther out of the grave than they had been before. The burnt black parts of me fell off to reveal more fresh parts flesh underneath. And then, I started hunting. Craving any novel form, I darted into this ash-fed forest, Absorbing anything I saw that caught my fancy. The first took the longest on account of its sheer mass-the first tree that I could get my tendrils on. As its body piece by piece was dissolved and brought into my form, I took in its hardy characteristics. Looks like the wooden shields I'd had at first were back on the menu! Much of the rest of it was just a nice bonus. Perhaps if I ever learn how to maintain a change, might be able to use it's structural parts to get more massive.

Everything else in my feeding frenzy goes by a whole lot quicker, on sheer account of being a lot smaller. Some small racoon like creature had been dozing in it's branches-reduced to nothing but an addition of proper animal tissue to my repertoire. My undifferentiated flesh seemed to do everything I already needed, but I imagine redundant devoted organs could prove handy. Some deer-type thing watches on in terror and tries to flee- only to find that even while my speed is lower than everything else, it's still augmented by Enoch's obscene boost, so I get its hooves and antlers. A bobcat of some kind made the very poor decision to try and take a bite out of my hide-only for it to end up the one eaten while I get claws and fangs.

It wasn't long before my voracious hunger for novelty soon depleted everything I could identify as such remotely close by-anything with half a brain having long fled, the crashing of my body tearing through the forest with each movement signaling them to take flight, and things that couldn't being mostly plants, which lose some luster after the first couple. There may be some chemical cornucopia to be found in the bushes and vines about, but it's hard for me to be sure of that enough for them to attract my attention. Although they were simply conquests by dint of raw stats, skill levels seem to care a lot less about that them my general ones did-so Assimilation and Absorption both hit their third level by the time I'm interrupted in my devouring.

What causes this pause to be given?
