Chapter 4
by jef13123
Oh Fuck?
FUUUUUUUUUCK
The floor vanishes beneath John, and he begins to fall. He passed the floor before he could even react, and Statera's amused laughter followed him into the void of space. Nothing seemed to move out here, not the planet below him or the stars surrounding him. No wind raced past his ears, or stabbed into his eyes. There was no air flowing into his lungs, or cloth brushing against his skin. His only companion was the rush of blood through his ears. For a moment, that sound deafened him, after the silence of the divine realm. He knew intellectually he was falling, but there was no feeling, no sensation that confirmed that knowledge. For a timeless second, all still. The blazing sun touched his skin with it's light, the warmth of it a shock to his nerves after the sensation of nothingness. A distant speck of purple caught his eye, as the 4th planet leaped into focus. From his celestial position, he could see every pebble, every crag of every mountain, all at once. Then it was gone, and he was felt he was falling.
John turned he gaze downwards, and saw the planet of Maran in all of it's majestic beauty. From the snow covered mountains, to the deepest of blue oceans. Rivers the color of silver cut through the green of the woods, and gold of the plains. Cities, just specks of grey against the backdrop of nature. Then, his mind realized the cities were growing, and panic gripped him as reason fled. He was falling, with no way to stop. No way to slow his fall. He was going to die, just a splat of red upon the ground, his only legacy some slightly more fertile ground, and some animals with a full belly. His heart rate spiked, it's beating blending into a dull hum as his mind searched desperately for any action that he could take to save his life. When none came, he slowly began to calm, and take in the beauty of the world. A smile came to his face, untouched by wind. It truly was a world of untamed nature, the land covered with ancient forests dappled with shadow. As he passed the height of the tallest mountains, a thought struck him. Where's the wind? My eyes should be glued shut, but they aren't. I'm not hearing the roar of air, or really anything. Then he passed though a cloud, with nothing, not one single drop of water on his body. A wild grin split his face, as the unreality of the situation set in. He laughed in silence, his mute laughter containing the unbound joy of a man spared **** at the last moment. He reveled in the sight of the growing land, fear replaced by a mad urge to fall even faster. He turned his body, so his head faced the ground, and his feet the sky. He gained speed even faster, and the land began to blur towards the edge of his vision, as the trees directly below him grew in detail.
At the last moment, just before he hit the trees, he stopped. The world was still silent, the rustling of the leaves making no noise as he floated above them. Then, the world snapped into full reality as began to fall once more. Tree limbs whipped him as he past, bruising his body with each impact, and spinning him around wildly. In the chaos, he barely knew to keep his legs closed, and grab onto any branch he could. When he finally landed flat on his back, his body ached in every place it could. The mere act of breathing sent fire through his chest, and the resultant cough made him insensate. However, the pain dulled to an ache, and John began to check that nothing was broken. Once he confirmed that minor miracle, he turned his attention to a flashing light at the corner of his vision. With the acknowledgement of it's presence, the light transformed into a pale blue screen floating in the air.

A well supplied camp.
Once he had read the message, and wanted it gone, the screen vanished. Slowly, he crept to his feet, with every part of his body protesting the action. Looking around, as he leaned against a tree trunk, John saw a simple sheet of grayish green canvas draped over a steel bar supported at both ends. The edges were staked to the ground, with a metal steamer chest set nearby. Both of those items at in a clearing with green, translucent bubble around it, and a simple stone fire ring sat in the center of the clearing. Slowly, he limped through the green bubble, and towards the chest. He heaved the lid open, and saw a void in it's interior. A screen popped into existence, with a grid of cartoon drawings depicting food, medical supplies, and a few things he couldn't easily identify. Tentatively, John tapped the icon of a what he guessed was a first aid kit, and the simple, white box with a red cross appeared in his hands. He set it on the ground, and opened the box. Inside, he saw a similar void, with the same basic grid pattern. He scanned the cartoons, noticing that when he focused on one, a description appeared below the icon. He quickly found a bottle of painkillers, and something described as an accelerated regeneration pill. _Well, quick healing is a staple of games, so I guess this makes sense. And, the fact of the mattes is, if I try to heal naturally it's gonna take a long time. _His mind made up, he quickly read the directions for each, and seeing no warning against taking both, he dry swallowed them at once.
Almost immediately his pain vanished, and the bruises seem to fade in real time, all over his body. "Damn, that's some powerful stuff. I'll have to make sure to keep an eye out for where I can find more." He paused, a frown furrowing his face. "That's not english. I'm not speaking english. I guess this is Common then." He shakes his head, the reality of the situation sinking in after the adrenaline rush of the fall, and the pain of the landing. He repacks the medical kit, noting that he has quite a few more of the regen pills, enough for him to have 3 a day, in this one single kit. When he puts the kit back in the trunk, he notices that he was given 4 more kits, each with the same label, and presumably the same contents. The implications that he's going to need them tie a knot in his stomach. However, he shoves that thought aside, and looks through what else he was given. Ration packs, vouchers for a weapon, armor and basic materials, a class stone, and a simple statue of a hooded woman, her arms down by her sides. His gaze snaps to the statue, and it is described as the statue of Statera Nitor, and he immediately takes the statue out of storage, and reverently places it upon the ground. A wave of popups flash across his vision.
