Chapter 5 by jef13123 jef13123

Pop quiz, anyone?

No, actually.

John blinked, staring at the screen in front of him, frozen in confusion. His eyes drifted to Blessed Ranger class, and he began to carefully and deliberately think. _Okay, let's break this down. Due to my actions, I am being offered a unique class, but my actions are so basic that the Trial will kick my ass, assuming that the Blessed Ranger is actually a powerful class. After all, unique isn't the same thing as powerful, or good. World War 1 was a unique event, after all. _He sits down the steamer trunk, and minimizes the class offering. "I'm betting that if I do something actually impressive, I'll get a better class, and since this could arguably be a trial, there wont be other conditions. Even if I'm wrong, there wasn't any mention of a time limit, so I can probably get that class later." He grimaces, then stretches carefully. "I hate probably. But, either way, I need to find that nearby water source, and make some supplies."

The immediate actions chosen, he walks to the edge of the clearing. His suit should provide some basic protection, even if it is tempting fate to use a divine gift in such a way. He quickly finds a branch as long as he is, with the thickness of his forearm. After a few test swings, he nods to himself, and carries on. As he slowly walks through the forest, he is constantly looking back, making sure he can find his way to the camp, as well as keeping an eye on his surroundings. Off to his right, a branch snaps, and he tenses. He slowly brings the branch up, and turns to face whatever it is. The forest goes quite for a moment, as an unnatural stillness settles. Adrenaline floods his system, and his heart pounds in his chest. Suddenly, a massive python leaps out of the brush, and John barely manages to knock it aside. The snake slams into a nearby tree, and falls to the ground, stunned. John wastes no time, and lifts his stick far above his head, before slamming it down onto the snake, as if it were an ax. The first blow strikes just below the head of the snake, crippling it. The impact numbs his hands, and the stick almost falls out of John's hand. However, he tightens his grip, raises the stick once more, and lands a blow squarely on the snakes head, crushing it. All along the body of the creature, cracks appear, with light shining out of them. A moment passes, before the snake bursts into shards of light, that fade away as they drift apart. A single point of white light rises through the air, and hovers before John. Once his focus is upon it, it burst into a pale blue screen.

Loot:
One Viper Egg (Epic, Female, requires 20000 EXP to hatch)
Viper's Fang (Uncommon, toxic/melee)
Viper Leather (Common, treated, Small)
Skill: Awareness
Skill: Mighty Blow
200 EXP

John shudders as he reads the information. "That was a viper? It was fucking huge. Anyway, on to the loot." Once he closed the window, he felt a sensation similar to the a spider walking across his brain and spine. With motions that he doesn't realize he's making, he opens his inventory. There, he sees a cartoon egg, a knife with a green drop at the end, and a piece of scaled leather. They were rather easy to find, as they were the only things in the grid. "Well, that's convenient, I guess. Really don't like the sensation, though. Lets see what these actually are." His focuses on each of the items he was awarded, and reads the description.

Item: Viper Egg (Female, requires 20000 more experience to hatch)
The egg of the basic snake monster. Once hatched, it will bond to the one that provided the experience, and will be loyal to the hatcher. Can evolve once certain conditions have been met.

Item: Viper's Fang (Toxic/melee)
A dagger that poisons, and deals damage. Impossible to collect poison from the blade.
Deals 5-10 damage upon hit, low chance to poison. Poison deals 5 damage per second, for 10 seconds.

Item: Viper Leather
Crafting material

"Huh, I wonder how I can give the egg experience. Anyway, it's not important now." John closes his inventory, and resumes his exploration. His Awareness skill is irrefutably, the best reward he could have gotten from the snake. Time and time again, it saves him from ambushes, allowing him to counter the lunges of the animals, and finish them off with a single Mighty Blow. As he becomes more familiar with his stick, and his skill, he is occasionally able to trigger Mighty Blow with his counter attack, killing the creature in one brutal move.

Late in the evening, he finds a swiftly moving stream, with the clearest water he has ever seen. As he crouches down to take a drink, a flash of something catches his eye. Looking closer, he sees a glimmer of metal buried in the dirt of the creek bed. He carefully digs it out, revealing the object to be a perfect cube of polished, silver metal the size of his fist. He turns the cube over in his hands, and sees a single imperfection dead center on a single face. A rustling of the brush startles him, and he immediately places the cube in his inventory, grabs his staff, and heads back to his camp.

John arrives just as the sun touches the horizon. Once he enters the green barrier, his body feels lighter, as all the minor, insignificant aches and pains of a day in the wood are healed. The crystal emits a steady, regular glow of natural, if slightly green-tinted, lighted. He glances at the cube in his inventory, and is confused by the description.

Enhancement Cube
Used to rank up skills that have achieved rank 100. Has a greatly reduced effect if used at lower ranks.

_Wait, skills have ranks? I mean, yeah, it's a common thing in RPGs, which this world is basically, so it's not that surprising. _A thought occurs to him, and stomps in frustration. "I never asked for a tutorial! Fuck, that's definitely going to bite me in the ass later. I really hope I'm not screwing myself over with the class choices." A sigh escapes him, as he rolls his shoulder. He quickly slides is clothes into the inventory screen, after manually taking them off. "I'm willing to be that there's a better way to do this, but I'll deal with that tomorrow. Odds are that there's some kind of class system."

Hey numbnuts, your two weeks are the tutorial.
